Yes definitely a slow worm. They hibernate in old compost heaps and piles of rock and masonry, old overgrown gardens etc. He’s just emerging by the looks of it. Do you have anything like that nearby they could be using?
It’s a slow worm. A super chill, very cool, legless Lizard. If you’re gentle, pick them up and look at the belley. You can see patches where the vestigial legs are. They can’t bite but they will coil themselves around your hand and poke at you with the tip of their tail. They probably hibernate under pots and pavings slabs in your garden then come out and warm themselves up on the concrete. They eat slugs and snails so they’re good to have in a garden.
Slow worms like it under corrugated sheets and other flat cover that warms under the sun, I think they’re pretty rare.
I’m from belfast. We don’t have snakes here or slo worms. Remember seeing these in England in a beer garden and warning everyone about these shiny coats. I’ll never go to Virginia waters again
Sit down son, it’s time we talked about the birds and the bees.

Slow worms please do not ever use slug pellets
The replies here are educational as heck, and I’m very much enjoying all your slow worn facts
Ahhh I’ve only ever seen one of these guys in my whole life, was completely in awe as it was so surreal.
Nice. Love these fellas. I find them in my back garden every spring. Be careful while mowing and strimming.
This is in the UK?? How big was this cm wise?
I’m kind of scared
I like slow worms. But I still remember digging up some mud and accidentally chopping one in half. Poor thing.
Blackadder
Slow worm!
The population has been decimated by outdoor cats who kill them.
Used to see loads as a kid, can’t remember the last time I saw one alive now
If you have a compost heap in the garden, that’s probably where they live. The rotting vegetation will maintain a certain core temperature and they’ll exothermically warm up before the day does.
Plus, there will be an abundance of earthworms in there too.
I’m impressed. The new “circle to seach” function found that to be a European Glass Lizard almost instantly.
How big is it? It looks massive if that’s normal wall rendering on the side
See lots of them in my work (watermain engineer). Love them.
How does one attractt these creatures to ones garden?
When a mummy snake and a daddy snake love each other very much…….

We’ve got slow worms that live under a plastic sheet that covers our large compost heap (mostly deciduous leaf mulch). They’ve been there 30+ years now. Seem to be perfectly happy.
