I believe my parents had one of these in their hallway on a telephone seat (whatever that was)!
My Mum said that they were one of the only houses on the street that had a landline phone in the 1970’s, and she had a money box next to the phone 📞 for neighbours to deposit coins into when they came knocking to use the phone.
Because they used pulse dialling you could tap the number out on the switch hook. Apparently…..
Never used one of these in real life as they were a bit before my time but I’ve always loved the sound they make whilst being dialled in TV and film. No idea how realistic the sound is, obviously.
Earlier than that. The first one I ever saw my aunt got … she was the local midwife and the NHS paid for it. I’m pretty sure that was the mid to late 60s, cos I was still in junior school.
And yes, it was in the hall.
You could still dial by tapping the pegs that the receiver sat on.
One tap for number 1, ten taps for 0…
Could you still dial 999 on this if it was locked?
I surmise phones and seats were in the hallway as it was drafty and so it kept call times down to a minimum.
Anyone else here, remember how to use one of these dinosaurs? I do. Just curious is all
“Hello, Bournemouth 577676”
Bet lockpickinglawyer’s parents had that on the phone and that’s how it all started
> Pulse dialing has entered the chat
My mum still answers the phone with the 3 digit phone number we had before our village was absorbed into the next town (adding 7 more numbers) and then the 1 on “PhONE Day” in 1995.

Yeah, our phone was locked. That was how I called my friend Jason.
My dad put a lock on our phone in London way back when. This photo brought up nasty memories 😂
And the kids didn’t have the Lock Picking Lawyer to show them how to pick it!
My Nan & Grandad had ‘a shared line’ back in the early 70’s, put that in your GDPR Data Protection toolkit!
9………….9…………..9. No he’s dead.
I have one of these phones issue is phone anywhere and , press star key ….
And remember when some people would answer the phone by saying their number out loud in full
Why would you need to lock the house phone?!
What if there was an emergency?
Jesus, that brings back some (unhappy) memories…
I remember this and even the ones you would have to out mo eyes in to use how technology has changed in last 20 years
