Insta-Royalty: Japan’s Emperor and Royal Family Join Instagram

Japan’s Imperial Family has now joined Instagram marking their debut on social media alongside other royal households who have embraced digital platforms.

Led by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, the family’s Instagram presence marks a big change for the world’s oldest monarchy.

By Tuesday evening, the account had reached over 574,000 followers and posted an additional 19 images featuring family members.

Though this move reflects the changing times and a step towards modernisation for the Japanese royals, the page remains a carefully curated feed managed by a traditional monarchy.

The first post on @kunaichi_jp was of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako alongside their 22-year-old daughter, Princess Aiko, smiling as they celebrated New Year’s Day.

The 22-year-old Princess Aiko does not have her own social media accounts, but instead shares the new Instagram account with her parents.

  1. I'm impressed by the diversity of viewpoints expressed in this thread. It's like exploring a rich tapestry of ideas.😻

  2. Aside European monarchies, the Japanese monarchy is one of my favorites.

God bless Emperor Naruhito and his wife Empress consort Masako and their daughter princess Aiko, not forgetting the Emperor's father, the now abdicated Emperor Akihito and mother Michiko.

  5. There was an exhibition at the Asia Society Museum about Emperor Meiji of the Meiji Era. The exhibition highlights his reign pioneering the transition of Japan from a feudal society to an advance industrial one. Classical Music, Symphonies composed dedicated to him?; Steam Engine locomotives and how the interior light was viewed at night and Meiji Cloisonné specifically shotai shippō or plique-à-jour were what the exhibition displayed propelled him into advanced industrialism 🇯🇵

  6. Congratulations to the Emperor & His Family. Social media engagement is a tool to see another side of the world. Familiarity also breeds contempt. It can be hazardous when citizens feel too comfortable seeing Royalty & Monarchs as everyday people in social media feeds. Of course it is tempting to want to engage fans with the treats of brilliant photographic updates, yet is also a similar equivalent of retaining a 1to1 conversation with every member of a large crowd as well as every profile that someone anonymously created as a portal of the things they want to say without being held responsible. That has been known to be used as an 'emotions tweaker' or manipulater, pre important occassions, when fake profile fans dwindle from thousands of likes, to control, subdue, affect, manipulate, alter the ego of popularity. It may seem obvious or less obvious, yet the enjoyment of popularity likes could also make some people feel as though they need to do more to regain fans or credibility. I hope this helps. Much love & kind respects, Theresa McCaffery 🙋‍♀️☯️
