This stork was seen near Crystal Peaks, Sheffield, UK – a rare site. I was sure that they didn't live in the UK, or is it just me? Could it have escaped from somewhere?

  1. That’s not a stork in the picture, that looks more like a Grey Herron. They are fairly common near rivers or lakes.

  2. Yep that’s definitely a Heron, we get those visiting us regularly. I’ve seen them catch frogs and spend a few minutes dipping them in the water to wash them before swallowing them.

  3. You see Herons in London fairly often. Spooky, spooky birds.

  4. That’s a heron. Pretty common across the UK. Neighbors got a pond?

  5. While on the subject of mistaken identity is it possible I saw an egret in the south of england? I googled it after and it was definitely that, but I have only seen it once, making it rarer than herons sighting for me, have maybe seen one 4 times.

  6. Stork fly with their necks outstretched, herons with their head tucked

  7. Listen !!!

If a dee dah tells you it’s a stork !!!

    It’s a stork !

    Good find- high 6 !

  8. Last year, a Stork flew over my house (South Lincs). I was in awe if it’s size and immediately recognised it. The black wing tips were the giveaway. A stork would dwarf a Grey Heron.

  9. Have a look down your chimney, might be a little bundle of joy there

  10. Someone didn’t watch animals of farthing wood as a kid

  11. Someone wasn’t raised on the Animals of Farthing Wood 😛

  12. Ignore everyone saying it’s a Heron.

It is in fact a *Grey* Heron.

    Christ.

Bet most of you talk about “seagulls” as well you absolute Barbarians.

As for Storks, they exist on the Knepp estate in Sussex only. Hopefully to spread further, British people generally don’t appreciate just how much large Fauna should be a part of these isles and how nature depleted we are.

  13. Someone’s about to experience their own Ghibli movie

  14. I’ve seen them (Herons) in South London – not that rare…

  15. That’s a heron right? They live all over the uk, but it’s still awesome to see them about. There’s a few that live near me as there’s canals and reservoirs here

  16. That’s a Grey Heron, we get a few nearby along the canal
