The bigger picture here is Andy Burnham looking to take over as Labour leader and challenge Boris .
Interesting.
Yes what we need right now is more celebrity politicians…
Go away.
Well it’s not a bad move, Gary seems to be very popular plus he has tremendous common sense.
He’d be a decent candidate.
But it would be bloody difficult for City fans and other United haters to vote for him, even if they know he’d do a good job…
Couldnt manage a football club, so hows he going to major a city?
Gary could be a good candidate for a few years’ time, but I like Andy Burnham.
I’m not entirely sure he’d be a good politician. It’s easy enough to poke at this laughable government on Twitter and get liked by your millions of followers, but it’s a different thing entirely to making policy and taking decisions themselves.
He can influence planning for his property portfolio when on the inside.
Another multimillionaire without a moment of adult working class life experience to tell me about “common sense” economics and how actually landlords and property investors are a good thing. Fantastic.
For gods sake no. Leave this stuff to people who know what they are doing.
Is he likeable and does he seem a decent guy, yes. But so are hundreds of other people. What does he possibly know about being a mayor
I mean he can’t make is any worse.
Jk obvs. He’s clearly smart and popular enough, and he’s got a lot of green credentials which isn’t a bad agenda to push.
Liverpool fan here. I don’t give a shit that he used to play for Man Utd. The guy has good values, as evidenced by many things he’s said publicly. I’d think he’d do a much better job than some people who have been in politics for years. To be as successful as he was in football he clearly has a strong work ethic and a very professional attitude. I think he’s also more articulate than people acknowledge. As for people commenting on his money; he wasn’t born a millionaire. He’ll remember the days when he and his other young teammates had to scrub the first-team players’ boots. The way he talks about the working class and the less fortunate is admirable. He’s clearly very caring.
The fact he doesn’t have a background in politics makes him extremely well suited to politics in the current climate.
Gary wants a party too.
TBF his brother did do the finest step over that United has ever seen. Maybe Gary can get Phil to show this to Europe and they might allow us back?
“Asked by Nick Robinson whether he would consider running for mayor of Greater Manchester when Andy Burnham’s term ends, Neville said: “I’m not sure that would be for me to be honest.”
Is that “considering”?
So will he take over as mayor when Burnham moves to Westminster?
Hated him as a player, continue to hate him as a pundit.
He’s also a multi million pound property developer.
But everything political he’s said has made sense to me. He’s spent his adult life surrounded by wealth but has neither lost the common touch or the values that matter.
Compare that to the current leadership
Neville is utterly out of his depth and the politicians will make him look like a fool. His answers to questions about the so called fan led review prove that. A patsy imo.
Oh look a likeable late career celebrity thinks just because their popular that they can simply become a politician despite having no political ability or knowledge, (and lets be honest interest) of the local area or it’s problems.
The .U.S has been plagued with this, “celebrity politician” phenomenon for a long time now and it’s causing alot of problems, lets not make the same mistake: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7ODeW4qaDg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7ODeW4qaDg)
(Isn’t that how Boris became London Mayor and thus considered by the Tories as a serious .P.M. candidate?).
Hey it’s a good avenue to go down if he wants to expand his property empire in the city. Can’t knock a man for wanting to make a buck.
Another celebrity with a sense of entitlement. #yawn.
Although he speaks well on behalf of people. I can’t help but feel his main reasons to do this would be to enhance his property empire.
Every time he tweets anything not football related the replies are filled with “Gary mate you should just talk about Football”
Hopefully he can pull this off
This man is probably the worst coach my team has ever had in more than 100 years. I wouldn’t have him as the president of the home owners association.
People don’t seem to understand that public office actually requires skill. Football does not prepare for such complex job
There is a reason he was called busy cunt.
No one really likes gaz – he’s just tolerated
If all the Man Utd fans turned out to vote for him, he’d definitely have a chance of being voted mayor of London.
I’d prefer him running things instead of Blairites or Tories. If he surrounds himself with experienced and well meaning staff, then he should be fine and it could set the stage for him replacing Kier Starmer who may as well join the Tories as Kier has more in common with them then most of Labour.
Having read several MSM articles about this topic, I must admit, I really can’t believe just of biased some of these stories appear to be.
Some (MSM articles) stating categorically not going to happen and others stating it will.
From what I have gathered, he would be a popular choice and a welcomed change over whom he would replace, but it doesn’t seem like his heart is in it, nor that it’s something he would enjoy.
I welcome such changes to the labour party, of course, and indeed if he decides to step in a mayoral role, all the better, but I do wonder if this is at all likely.
