The PSNI say they have dealt a "huge" blow to organised crime following the seizure of £1.25million worth of cannabis at Belfast Port.
The "major haul" was made on Sunday morning by detectives from the PSNI's 'paramilitary crime task force' alongside Belfast Harbour Police.
A man in his 40s has been arrested and remained in police custody on Sunday evening.
A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Detectives from the Paramilitary Crime Task Force and Belfast Harbour Police have seized herbal cannabis with an estimated street value of £1.25 million at Belfast Port this morning, Sunday 7th April.
"A 41-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of possession of Class B controlled drugs and possession of Class B controlled drugs with intent to supply, remains in police custody."
Detective Chief Inspector Ray Phelan said: “This is a major haul of cannabis which would have ended up on the streets of Northern Ireland.
“Losing this amount of drugs will be a huge loss to the organised crime group behind this importation.
“I should add that this significant search, arrest and recovery of drugs highlights the ability of strong partnership working with key stakeholders to tackle this type of organised criminality."
The officer continued: “And I would to appeal to anyone who can help us identify suspects or provide any information about suspected drug dealing in their area to call the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, information can also be given anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111."
A police spokesperson added: "You can also submit a report online using our non-emergency reporting form via http://www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/

  1. So any of those folks who come in here asking where to get some, Belfast Port seems to have loads

  2. £1.25 million? Is that the street value of it, or the purchase price the gang would have paid? I suspect the latter, so how much did this seizure actually cost the gang out of pocket?

  3. If only we could show some forward thinking, legalise it and tax it instead of wasting public resources on it.

What bigger “blow” to organised crime that removing their market monopoly?

  4. Street value? I might say to that if they took down 500 cows at street value, they are pumping up the number. Cattle need feeding. Cattle require labour hours by people. Cattle require a lot of expense. Ask a farmer. If you look at sale prices of cattle, you could think it’s wild. That’s the number the clowns are throwing around. Wise up. 1.25 million? That’s police looking to feel important. It probably half that and half again after they try to clean the money. And it’s cannabis. It’s a nothing drug.

    ‘Stakeholders.’

    Guess someone touted?

  6. AHH, that’s some quality policing there lads. World saved from people eating too many bags of crisps.

  7. A political party needs to state they will work to legalise this, as they would have massive backing to scrap these big charges for trying to chill out, especially just after a pandemic when mental health services are in crisis. A massive oversight has been to brush it under the rug and not consider a big commitment to servicing this national crisis. Mentally, this has plagued our lives for generations. There needs to be some common sense provided in a public service like this funded close to the top of the priority list. If there are no normally functioning human beings left, they need to be able to afford that kind of treatment quickly. I’m speaking from a standpoint of trying to fix the origin of addiction. However, it remains to be seen that cannabis can be used for many things and has proven its positive effects.

  8. For god sake just legalize the stuff.
1.25 mil value of carlsberg special brew would do more harm than good

  9. Last time I was in Amsterdam I joined an elderly peaceful protest walk through the central of the city and had a smoke and pastries with these hippies that where aposing war of any kind March, ending up on Al Jazeera news.

    This drug isn’t hurting anyone.

  10. *“Losing this amount of drugs will be a huge loss to the organised crime group behind this importation. “*

It will do fuck all. While drugs remain illegal it will remain an easy revenue stream for criminals.

  11. Oh my God you people are so safe right now.

It’s going to be a hard few days for the funeral home industry.
