I expect The Torygraph will be telling soon us that invading Egypt to protect the Suez Canal could be a mistake.
We got what we deserved, control over oil wealth was in the hands of the UK Government and Thatcher spent it on tax cuts for the wealthy.
Lord Heseltine condemned the squandering of this asset and was calling for a UK sovereign wealth fund as late as 2017, which could have been a Scottish sovereign wealth fund had 2014 worked out better.

The difference being that the Tories sold off the nationalised BNOC and Britoil to BP for a knockdown price that would have been of similar value to Norway’s Sovereign Wealth Fund had it remained in state hands.
