  1. The sanctions better be heavy. Otherwise it will set a precedence for future attacks.

  2. Definitely needs some serious sanctions, no messing around here. Sets a bad example else!

  3. This is insane, imagine if England would have raided the Ecuadorian embassy for catching Assange.
Novoa trying everything to look like a strong leader without measuring the consequences. Hope the international community makes him regret this idiocy.

  4. Isn’t an embassy the sovereign territory of the nation which it belongs to? This is quite a big deal

  5. Serious question: why was Mexico allowing this guy to hole himself up in the embassy?

  6. Heard he was caught taking millions in bribes from the cartel. Nothing much here. No idea who is outraged.

  7. Unlikely to be many outrage from the US since the US has never ratified it and only agreed to be a party to it and in effect the department of states limit several of its clauses especially on inviolability and searching diplomatic pouches.

Ecuador did thought without any reservations or declarations limiting its scope in domestic law when they ratified it. So unless they cancelled the embassy status and we don’t know yet prior to this and gave enough time for mexico to depart it (which is legal in the convention since an embassy is based on “mutual consent”) they are fucked.

  8. If Trump got convicted and sentenced to prison, then went and hid in the Russian embassy in DC, do you think he would be protected from the law?

  9. The Ottoman Emperor used to have all diplomats immediately enslaved upon declaration of war with their countries.

The idea of international law and decorum is fairly new in human history and not often respected.
