Today I learned that the economist who did that report on the cost of a United Ireland last week is John Fitzgerald, who I’ve heard of before and know to be a top man

  1. I don’t mind paying a bit more tax when it comes to re-uniting, as in the long run it’ll pay off economically for the whole island.

Have you ever noticed that loads of FFG types seem to always bring out the downsides of a United Ireland? Because in a United Ireland, SF will be even more powerful, and they scare all FFG and their business buddies.

  2. I knew I recognised his mug!

Why do lads like this continue to be put into top spots despite obvious incompetence. It’s like those CEOs who run five companies into the ground, but keep being giving new jobs in other companies.

He’s an economist. His job is to analyse and forecast. Nobody expects you to be right all the time, but if you keep making broad statements that are spectacularly wrong…maybe you’re just not very good at this?

  3. Always the cowboys and the crooks that come out with these arguments. The headline numbers were clearly sensationalist bullshit but the entire approach is completely wrongheaded to begin with. Opposing unification cos it will cost money is like opposing child benefit cos children aren’t productive. If membership of the republic is contingent on economic output right at this moment then Connacht should be expelled and people like your man Fitzgerald should be stripped of citizenship.

  4. I wouldn’t be attacking him personally (although I must admit his track record does not look good), but some of the assumptions of his report seemed a bit batty. He genuinely seemed to be out to paint the most negative possible picture that could be reached.

  5. Well at least he was honest about it. Some of the lies the banks and government told drive people to bankruptcy.

  6. So what does it take to be an economist? Do you just ring up the news agencies every once in a while and say any old shite and then hang up?

  7. It’s obvious Fine Gael & The Independent are stoking up as much as fear as possible to prevent a United Ireland now that the numbers in Northern Ireland are moving to a United Ireland position . It’s about time the whole island was united after all the years been a colony of England .

  8. Fair play to all the redditors who never make mistakes.

  9. Lol,

The FFG brigade are hilarious when they get exposed for what they really are

  10. Michael Gove would feel fully vindicated by these comments.

  11. John Fitzgerald is also the brother of the cofounder of Sherry Fitzgerald, and the son of a former FG Taoiseach. He may have expertise in some matters (or not, going by the OP) but cannot be taken seriously as an honest actor on any matters involving FG or property. His latest FFG mouthpiece article also noted in the OP is just the latest example.

  12. His credibility & credentials mattered much less than him willingness to paint reunification in the worst possible economic light.

Shows how frightened certain sections of the media are of the conversations happening about the end of partition.

  13. The worst part of this was the dishonest reporting. His report said it would cost between 8-20 billion. Every article I read about it, including from our national broadcaster, just went with the 20 billion figure, without mentioning the lower estimate.

  14. Garret Fitzgerald’s lad. A unionist sycophant, hates Ireland and the Republic
