Ukrainians returning home to get dental treatment

1. Toothache and dental issues are a nightmare. But they wouldn’t see me dragging my child back to a warzone I supposedly fled in terror.

2. My gf does this too. Flies back to LT to see her dentist.

   I went to see him too. Top gent. NHS pricing and he’s one of the best private dentists in the country. Has all the fancy gadgets. Didn’t feel a thing vs the usual NHS butchery. Told me it was common for people to come from the UK and he could always tell due to the standard of the NHS work.

3. Dnipro is in the active war zone.

   At the risk of being unsympathetic, if she feels safe enough to go back there and have dental work done, perhaps she has no need of a visa or asylum to be in the UK, just like the asylum seekers that go home on holiday.

4. We also fly to Poland to get teeth fixed. British dentists are horrendous and so expensive. It’s cheaper to fly home, pay for all travel, get teeth done in a spotless, clean and professional Clinique and fly home.

5. They should have their asylum status revoked if they feel it’s safe enough for them to go home

7. It’s the same for my Polish colleague and my Bulgarian colleague. They’re appalled by the state of the dental system in the UK, as they right should be. I imagine that it’s a statement that will cause a lot of British readers to bristle at, but the fact is that Poland and Bulgaria actually have a more affordable, accessible, and functional dental system than the UK. 

   The UK has fallen so dismally far behind the rest of Europe in terms of basic healthcare, but many people aren’t able to recognise this because we’re isolated on a little island with no point of comparison to aspire to, so everybody just puts up and shuts up.

9. This is not a new phenomenon. It happened last year too. I’m still surprised that the cost of travel plus dental care doesn’t outweigh the cost of just going private in the UK.

10. Funny at the double standards for asylum seekers who return home on this sub. Other asylum seekers who go home for whatever reason get none of the nuance offered in this thread lol.

11. A friend of mine has been regularly travelling the 300 miles to her old NHS dental surgery in Scotland after moving house to England last year. It’s for ongoing treatment, but even with staying in a hotel it’s easier, (and probably cheaper), than trying to get private treatment near her new home.

12. Why does the BBC keep posting these clearly rage bait articles. There was one the other day about some woman on benefits after a bigger house but refusing to leave her town, and now one about ONE asylum seeker, and a rumour of a Ukrainian dentist treating “several” with no actual proof of it happening?

    The public are being duped into a culture war whilst the people at the top sit and laugh.

13. Best visiting Turkey. Healthcare in the UK is dead. Dunno who managed this but paying high taxes and getting nothing is awesome.

14. They are lucky they have the option. Most might not get the reference, but it’s like that episode of Steptoe and son, where the joke is that even some escaped criminals are in a better financial position than they are. We are all Steptoes now.

15. Actually she need not have travelled so far to get dental treatment reasonably priced. Romania or Bulgaria would have done. I personally have a dentist in Budapest that I have used to do expensive things like fit 5 implants and a bridge. I also have a private dentist in the UK that I use for cheaper things like routine check ups and scale and polish.

16. I’ve seen quite a lot of massive, young Ukrainian men walking around thrift stores. Quite baffling to be honest.

17. It’s good there, cheap, fast and quality is actually good. Recomend.
