Senegal president names opposition figurehead Sonko as PM • FRANCE 24 English

Senegal’s newly elected President Bassirou Diomaye Faye named his mentor and anti-establishment figurehead Ousmane Sonko as prime minister, just hours after being sworn in on Tuesday. Sonko, an opponent of former President Macky Sall, is popular among the West African nation’s youth but was barred from the March 24 presidential election due to a defamation conviction. He denied any wrongdoing.

  3. These two young men offer great hope for a stronger and better Senegal, more independent and free of foreign influence. To be noted, both men were jailed in an ongoing attempt by the previous government to protect their hand-picked but vulnerable candidate in the election that just occurred. But the people rose up in great numbers, protesting and demanding their release. More recently when the outgoing president attempted to delay the election the people rose up again. Power to the people! Another exciting development in the west African region!
