Mel Gibson calls Robert Downey Jr. ‘generous and kind’ for defending him

   You know what? Someone comes to my aid when I’m in dire straits and everyone else has turned their back on me, you can bet i’m ride-or-die for that motherfucker the rest of my life.

   Nobody is all bad and nobody is all good. Jodie Foster is not someone to suffer fools gladly and she also loves Mel. I never could square that circle, because she didn’t seem like someone to defend a POS but she does.

   We all have those friends right, those mixed bags? You know they’ve got some issues but they can also be wonderful people. I suspect Mel Gibson is one of those. Not trying to defend his misogeny, antisemitism, or general asshole-ness, but he did something good for someone once, we can and should applaud that. Positive feedback can be just as important as negative feedback.

2. He literally knocked the teeth out of his girlfriend’s head. Nah, he can kick rocks.

3. I’ve known far to many people that have went too far down the drug and alcohol path. And I’m happy when they put in the hard work to recover. However I consider deep ingrained racism or antisemitism a different beast altogether . That conditioning is harder to escape from . It’s quite possible Mel is free of all his previous prejudices because he f’d around and found out. But it’s much harder to tell if someone has truly done so or just hid those feelings deeper and made sure alcohol never loosened his lips again up to express them . Its great that RDJ returned the favor though . I hope Mel doesn’t disappoint again.

4. Life is long. I don’t really care for Mel as the performer or filmmaker anymore but RDJ is entitled to be his friend given their shared history. I spent the last year battling cancer and the people who were there for me the most were conservative family members with some very shitty political opinions. Many of my very liberal and morally righteous friends/family were always busy or completely ignored me altogether. I will never forget either and yet still maintain my progressive views. Life is complicated and so are people. Good for RDJ.

6. That’s a pretty cool story. Two people in a cutthroat industry that have no incentive to help each other paid it forward both ways because they both shared the same struggle.

9. Mel isn’t a nice person, but I have some friends who genuinely are not nice people so I understand this.
