Summary:
Smokers cost the health system a lot of money, in addition to that they cost the economy a lot of money by being ill more often than their non smoking peers. But they also generate a lot of money through tobacco taxes and they help safe some money in pensions because they die earlier. All in all the taxes and savings in the AHV result in a net positive effect of 1.6 billion CHF/year.

Im a heavy smoker, and i have never been ill because of smoking..
I think that the Netherlands once told its citizens to smoke and to drink more because they die sooner and therefore don’t cost the pension funds as much money.
This is nothing new. The best thing for AHV is having many heavy smokers. They pay a boatload of taxes and are more likely to die early. That’s ideal from a government institution perspective.
The campaign against the tobacco ad ban should be “allow tobacco ads, save AHV” lmao
So what? Every time someone dies before or at best around age 65, it saves the AHV half a million francs. What’s next, claiming that serial murderers are helping to solve the retirement crisis too?
