UK Surgeon who wrote his initials on two patients’ livers loses his license

  1. Can’t help but thinking this is pretty harmless stuff on an organ that regenerates, in a country where we desperately need medical staff.

Shouldn’t have been more than a slapped wrist.

Edit: obviously am going to get downvoted to fuck. But if something was wrong with you or a loved one and the choice was: see a competent surgeon who once did some stupid but harmless shit OR wait, well, I know which I’d prefer. And those are the choices atm.

  2. Like carving your name on a desk in school, doesn’t affect anyone but the teacher will still tell you off, personally I wouldn’t give a shit if he wrote his initials on my liver- he earned it! Saving my life, write your biography on my arse crack while your at it, precious little fuckers in this sub, its only abit of graffiti! I bet you’d wash away a Banksy if you came across one, kitsch -__-

  3. Lots of people posting sentiments here that have been also posted around some medical subreddits – he shouldn’t have done it but no harm done. I wonder how people would feel if he’d had a cheeky grope of an anaesthetised patient? No physical harm done, patient wouldn’t know unless someone ratted him out. Same abuse of power in a position of trust to get his kicks from assaulting a sleeping patient. I think there’d be few people complaining about a harsh judgement from the GMC for that.

  4. My brother had Bramhall as a consultant for a brief period years ago. Given the amount of specialists he’d seen over his life for his liver issues, he really rated the guy, knew his stuff and was very approachable. So he was really annoyed he’d done something so stupid for entirely egotistical reasons. What a waste.

  5. “Bramhall later explained that he had made the decision to sign the organs to lighten the atmosphere in the operating room.”

Nothing defuses tension like a bit of light mutilation comedy.

  6. He shouldn’t have done it and should face some sort of consequences but I don’t think removing his licence is the right move.

  7. I literally cannot get my head around this case for a myriad of reasons. Primarily because he was not reprimanded in the slightest, slap on the wrist at most.. and also because so many people (including people I spoke to personally) didnt think it was that much of a big deal – many suggesting it’s tantamount to an artist signing his work, or it doesn’t matter because he saved their lives and the Liver heals.

I say to that; WHAT THE FUCK. I don’t know whether i’m crazy but IMO this surgeon is psychotic or in the very least quite disturbed… it’s disgustingly unethical, it totally goes against his oath as a doctor to not harm another human.. I just can’t articulate enough reasons as to why this is fucked up and more so I can’t believe people aren’t that bothered by it.

It goes along with my theory that the people who commit very unethical but minor crimes do so because they know they won’t be penalised, in which case if in the same vein they wouldnt get penalised for a more severe crime like murder, then all logic would suggest they would also commit that crime… this Surgeon fits that profile exaclty, he knew (or so he thought) that noone would ever uncover his “handy-work” and so he did it… so what else would he do if he thought he could?!

Bonkers is all I have to say…

  8. Meanwhile surgeon drawing dicks on kidneys is still at large. Really though, your own initials? How did this guy become a surgeon?

  9. As a very junior doctor when this all started, I was very surprised he wasn’t struck off in the first place. As a now fully CCT’d doctor, I’m still surprised he wasn’t struck off in the first place but equally sympathise with the protracted GMC nonsense as it shouldn’t have come to this and wouldn’t have been good for his mental or physical health. I agree that potentially losing a talented surgeon is less than ideal but given I know med students that did similar in dissection classes and were kicked out of uni, I feel fully qualified, eminent surgeons should be held to a slightly higher standard

  10. It’s a weird one. On one hand its fairly harmless, or another it sounds like a serial killer shit.
