The Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, has launched an Open Consultation on the Review of Alcohol Licensing, available to all members of the public to have their say. It’s FREE to make a submissions, but the closing date is THIS FRIDAY at 6pm.
Ireland’s venue and event licensing is tied to its alcohol licensing, and attached to archaic laws like the 1935 Public Dancehall Act and a Licensing Law that dates back to 1833!
This needs to change, along with bureaucratic systems that require Special Exemption orders of €410 for every night that a venue opens late, for example.
Later opening hours are on the cards, as are the possibility of new types of licences that could be used by theatres, art galleries and cultural spaces.
If you’d like to learn more about how these laws affect the music and arts industry in Ireland listen to this excellent podcast from Nialler9. Guests Sunhil Sharpe and R.Kitt of the Give Us The Night campaign do a fantastic job of explaining the pros, cons and possibilities that could arise from this consultation.

If you’ve ever been frustrated by getting kicked out of a venue early, or are upset about the lack of cultural spaces in Ireland, please consider filling out this survey or sending an email. It’s FREE and the closing date is TOMORROW at 6pm.
Spread the word!
Why are you upset about a law dating back to 1833? The older a law is, the more useful and logical it typically turns out to be, that is why it has stuck around so long.
In fact, we might be well served if we went back to the liquor laws of 1500 years ago during the era of St. Patrick. Of course back in St. Patrick’s day there were no laws or taxes regarding alcohol. People could brew, ferment, serve, sell, and consume alcohol with no government interference. It must have been a wonderful era. : )
I did it there now, in my opinion we should deregulate the opening hours in the industry. I say this as it would discourage binge drinking as why would you get polluted by 2am when the Nightclub doesn’t close until 4/5 am
This needs to be pinned or shared again. The amount of time this sub spends bitching about problems just like this and then does nothing about it when given the opportunity…
TIL that you need a license to sing.
What a joke
Education in alcohol abuse and easier access to those who need help would be more of a need instead of these barriers in shops and the stupid minimum price law that makes a case of beer nearly twice as expensive as a bottle of vodka.
Simple things like alcohol percentage on bar pumps, units written on bottles and making it illegal for street drinking would be a step in the right direction
Glad you reminded me. Alcohol MUST be banned.
