  2. Any Russians here that have attended services of the Russian orthodox church (in Russia) recently? Is there still some Christianity in it or is it just *here’s a mindless ceremony now go volunteer to kill Ukrainians*?

  10. This is what happens when you have state-sponsored Christianity. Oh sure, the Russian Orthodox Church in Russia isn’t technically state-sponsored, but nudge-nudge wink wink. Thousands of churches re-opened, cathedrals re-built, leadership allowed to openly function in Russia, and Putin pretending to embrace Christianity as a hallmark of Russian identity against the secular West. All the Church had to do was some theological tweaking, like using Old Testament for the justification of nationalism and considering patriotism/nationalism as a Christian ideal, declaring that the church is loyal to the state while maintaining the right to preach truth and that citizens should obey the state and church, and the usual polemics of “peace or war?” that justifies the church in supporting military action.

    It’s a peculiar mix of Biblical interpretation/application not really seen elsewhere (yet) that clearly binds the Russian Church to the Russian state, BUT yields any real power the church could have over the state. The medieval churches had real power. The Russian Church sucks state dick to earn the right to exist while pretending to follow in it’s historical model.

    WHAT THE HELL is a 30-40 year-old urban Russian (Moscow/Saint Petersburg is thinking/feeling/going through? I feel so sad for them. There they are just living out their lives and their government slides into an autocracy as the years have gone by…and now it’s in freefall. May they have what peace they can scratch up until this horror is OVER.

  36. Americans really should be grateful that vast majority of them don’t speak Russian. So they can’t hear how deeply and openly Russians hate Americans: starting from benign tirades from Zadornov on how stupid Americans are and ending with just plain terror threats on Russiaan TV where they destroy Washington DC with nukes as if it was nothing. The church is really just following the masses here.

    Some may say it’s just propaganda. But propaganda doesn’t work this efficiently if there weren’t a nation sized echo chamber. Just watch Russian TV, movies, TV shows and read their recent books. It’s the country in holy war mode.
