  4. Marriage is a legal contract. If you’re not old enough to sign a legal contract then you are not old enough to get married.

  6. Title is not exact, and post is a little misleading, but not much. 12 states have specified the minimum age for marriage is 18. There are 4 with no minimum, and the rest vary from 15 (Kansas) through 17.

  20. My grandparents had to consent for my mother to get married at age 17 (in 1964). No, she wasn’t pregnant. She was too young and it was an unhappy marriage.

  25. I have a cousin that was a child bride in Louisiana. Married at 14. She lived an awful life and didn’t make it to 30. Very sad. Her mother was the awful parent that forced it on her due to teenage pregnancy.

    Child marriage ended the career of a brilliant country singer/piano player and the collective outrage made WORLD headlines. And they were all RIGHT.
    The Age of Consent needs to be clearly set at 18.
    We know from experience that our young ones under that age do NOT have the tools to protect themselves from predators.
    AND when we consider how repugnican’ts have been siphoning-off, draining, out and out stealing funding from Public Schools (vouchers, anyone? private religious schools??), gutting, dropping, if not actively perverting programs that used to educate and fortify our youth like Sex Ed and, arguably, Home Economics, banning books and DEI programs that promote self autonomy and the right to choose for themselves, EACH of themselves, gender self-autonomy (when your person was born in the wrong body, it’s pretty damn apparent at an early age)…
    The fact that only 12 states have such a statute as this is appalling, America.
    WHO the ufck are the “leaders” to tell our “FREE” children how to educate themselves, let alone enjoy the protection of their choices?
    We are all shamed…
    WE have SHAMED ourselves, as a nation.
    We have lost our way and we NO LONGER hold the moral high-ground. We can NO LONGER lead the Free World, let alone draw the rest out of their “darkness”…

  28. The headline should read: 38 states still allow child marriage why aren’t we more outraged as a country!?
