CMA or government should’ve stepped in during covid to cap prices for them and the other big supermarkets given they were some of few businesses allowed to remain open during lockdown.
Fuck sakes it’s like your boss or manager coming over and saying “God mate I’ve made SO MUCH MONEY OFF OF YOU! I’ve got LOADS in the bank now! All thanks to YOU making ME all this WONGA!”
“No raises and you’ve got to stay late tonight to cover me whilst I’m getting SLOSHED ON MY YACHT MATE! WOOOOOO!”
Maybe, just maybe if they charged everybody the same price not an over inflated one, just Clubcard price but without the Clubcard
For context, their profits also tripled back in 2022 after the lockdowns and inflation. Profits returned to the original 1/3rd last year, and now they’ve very nearly tripled again.
Ever since covid, we’ve all been getting absolutely rinsed out by the supermarkets, and have constantly been told to blame “global conditions”, whilst their profits have soared.
Our government is too pathetic to do anything about this, but the supermarket bosses are partly to blame for families across the country going hungry over the past few years.
Hopefully now they might have enough money to pay the workers and god forbid charge a fair price without me having to agree to sell my data in order to access it …
I sat open-mouthed, watching this being announced on breakfast tele , immediately followed by a report into the numbers of people in this country who have found themselves in food poverty. Sickening
Tesco employ over 330000 people, they aren’t screwing anyone 😡
I’m not surprised that profits are soaring, they’re currently paying their customer assistants below minimum wage and it’s completely legal.
Yeah, the executives made sure the cost of living rises didn’t affect them. Sitting on their yachts, yelling “Crank up the prices as high as they can go guys, the public can take it!!!”
a bottle of olive oil was 9GBP when I went last week
Wasnt it obvious anyway that they just jumped on the bandwagon with everyone else increasing prices. Absolutely. Blatant war profiteering from energy firms and supermarkets. The “if they can, i will too” does unfortunately happen
Just in time for the new import checks to add new price pressures…
Let me guess, all those profits brought the CEO and other higher ups 5 yachts and 20 cars? Disgraceful
It’s quite telling that during a cost of living crisis, certain companies are seeing record profits.
It’s a clear sign of greedflation, something needs to be done about this, people are going without food while Tesco make record profits!
Get a club card n you’ll pay 2018 prices. Stop complaining about a solvable issue everyone I know has a clubcard
I always think Pringles are a good indicator of the market, they’re £2 RRP in most places, £1.75 on sale.
I use this one metric to assess shits expensive right now.
so my wife works for bookers wholesale which is owned by tescos.
she found out yesterday about the profits they have but the company have been refusing to give anyone a pay rise because the company just “doesnt have the money”
Am sure prices will rise again soon to cover the cost of minimum wage going up.
I keep trying to say that wage inflation is negligible compared to this toxic greed from record corporate profits and getting shot down. Apparently people getting pay rises to match actual inflation is bad but these kind of insane profits & British Gas getting 10 X previous years profits is fine
Seeing all the price drops last year was kind of heartwarming though, shit that was 1.50 pre pandemic suddenly being 2.80 of seed oil shite from branded manufacturers and less weight than before. Clubcard prices brought things back down but I refused to buy that crap and it only improved my diet. No more snacks. All meat and fresh produce.
The UK’s biggest supermarket chain said pre-tax profits hit £2.3bn, up from £882m.
Close to 200% profit!
From the public suckers!
Hahaha we rich.
Ukraine fault russian war Israel what ever.
That means that prices will move back down to normal levels given the easing of pressures on production and logistical costs, right?
Right?
Basic foodstuffs should not make a profit.
Luxury, fine. But you should not be able to profit from the basics people require to be alive.
I’m so happy for them that their profits are soaring…
