Nuclear energy is the only way the country can have enough electricity at this stage especially with the push for electric cars
We will be untouchable in the upcoming climate wars because our datacentres will contain the secrets of the world.
This is the end goal you plebs aren’t seeing.
All that crypto mining.
Doesn’t mention all the mini data centres that people are closing to move into the larger ones for economies of scale though, course not
We could be the capital of storing peoples porn search records & other vital data – and fucknup our electricity supply into the bargain
Electricity consumed by my teenage daughters jumps by 800% in five years
I love the internet so would support figuring out how to keep these centres running but without emitting carbon into the atmosphere
Ireland to be the first country to enter The Matrix.
Well if there are more data centres of course it will jump. same headline could be used for charging of electric cars. Also PS5 electricity consumption has jumped 200% in the same time
I drive quite regularly past the Facebook Data Center near Clonee, beside the M3, including at night time. The amount of light pollution that comes from there even at this time of night is staggering, wouldn’t be surprised if it was messing with local residents and wildlife.
It would be interesting to see what the stats are for water consumption too. Data centres using large amounts of fresh water for cooling is starting to become a pretty big scandal in other parts of the world. Might not be a big issue here because of our climate.
We are hung up on this at the moment, the question I would have.
So take FB for instance, massive datacentre covering a huge amount of ground in Meath. A good few acre of roof space.
Down the road the government have pushed land into some company who is going to fill it up with solar panels. Less than a 5m radius away. The locals don’t want it etc. It’s just ruining the local land for farming/animals etc(they spray all the ground to stop the grass growing.
Why the hell didn’t they fill the roof of the facebook DC’s with solar panels? at the moment nothing is on them and it will get the same performance as the fields down the road. It just seems stupid to me to leave all the roof space empty
Also, Ireland is great for DC’s and that is why they are here. It’s not too hot and not too cold so it takes less power to keep them going. This is actually great for the World climate and the overall CO2 in the World
What we have failed to do is get credits for the reductions we are providing by running these DC’s in Ireland. So we need to get Europe etc to give us credits, they are using the DCs as well so they can’t complain
