  1. Harris has opportunity to move McEntee, nah.

McEntee has chance to drop this shite, nah.

  2. Why are they so hell bent on pushing it through despite no one asking for it?

I’ll never vote for FG as long as Helen is a TD, let alone a minster.

  3. I don’t care if its only people shouting Nazi slogans free speech is mandatory and not up for debate based on the opinions of the current day.

  4. McEntee issues meaningless but reassuring noise.

    NGOs nod sagely.

The chilling effect and suppression by intimidation are what’s also part of the deal.

  5. Yeah when the government says something won’t happen it’s save to assume that it will definitely happen.

Anything can be misunderstood. A work email can be fine for one person but can be rude to another person.

So if this bill goes through, our courts will be giving suspended sentences to violent criminals and sexual predators whilst they imprison addicts and people who said bad words online.

  6. Similar legislation is being used to chill legitimate criticism of Israel in Germany and the UK. The harm the legislation can cause is not just theoretical – we can see it happening in front of our eyes. We should be promoting free speech in our partner countries, not playing follow-the-leader on the laws that they have demonstrated to be anti-democratic.

  7. Once again this just shows you that she should not be a government minister and the people who support her should not be allowed to vote or be able to only after an exam on Irish law and history.

Ireland has had a “Hate speech” law since 1998 ; being a country that has seen significant ethnic conflict throughout our history the 1998 bill covers discrimination based on religion, race, sexuality among others.

And the punishments contained in it are heavy enough.

The problem is she is using this bill to cover for the fact that law and order in Ireland has gone to the dogs and she wants to be seen as tough on the rioters who descended into Dublin City centre.

And for the people who shouldn’t be allowed to vote below commenting it was “The far right”. The rioters and looters were mostly people from disadvantaged backgrounds who were stealing things and had criminal records, there was also immigrants and people of colour looting the shops alongside them.

How do we know this? Everyone involved recorded it just like they always do when rioting and looting.

    – – –

And for the “Akshually” people who agree with her here the problem with laws around speech is that speech is generally classified under Tort law for the damage your speech is purported to cause harm to another person but it’s generally non-quantifiable ; separated from let’s say a traffic offence you sped at 20kmh+ and were caught on a camera doing so ; case open and closed.

There’s no actual structural and rational/logical way to punish crimes under this law and it will all come down to speculation and different applications of the law itself which will be absolute chaos.

  8. Inept inept inept. She needs to go and someone with actual experience needs to step in.

  9. This unnecessary legislation is going to cause mayhem. But sure maybe that’s what they want. Can only imagine the amount of false accusations and wasted resources.

  10. Simon “A New Energy” Harris, brings a new approach, brought to you by all the auld heads from the old approach. Be grand!

Hes missed an open goal keeping her in her position, Helen’s Hurty Words Bill must pass!

  11. Dublin is safe too, don’t believe a word she says!

  12. Voicing opinions will be criminalised. This bill needs to be binned. And that dope should resign.

  13. Oh she says does she? And what weight does that hold even now? Is she going to speach to judges and tell them how she thinks it should be interpreted. What about in 100 years time when she’s dead and gone but the legislation is still in place?

  14. People like this will use ‘free speech’ as an excuse to say what they want. How about we re-name it the ‘I’m a fuckin hate-filled cunt’ bill instead
