Please help

Hello guys and girls

Yasterday I just stopped at a gas station to fill my car.

The problem is that I filled my car with gas worth of 20 euros but the mechine charged me 120 euros, I tried to contact the gas station company but no luck

Please help me understand the situation better.

  1. doesn’t this just mean that they “reserved” 120€ and the actual charge is 18€?

  2. The gas station just “reserved” 120€ on your card, you will only be charged 18€ in the end, probably tomorrow.

  3. The machine authorized 120 Euros when you started the filling process. In the end you only consumed for 18 Euros and exactly those 18 Euros you were then charged for.

    If you want to check on your card app or website or customer service for your peace of mind, then you will see they only took 18 Euros.

    This is because you might have bought petrol for 120 Euros so they needed to check at the beginning whether you would have that kind of money on your card, that’s all. All good.

  4. Did you pay at a vending machine before refueling?The gas station reserves a certain amount and gives access to the pump.

    If you fill up for a lower amount, only the corresponding partial amount will be charged.
    If you need more gas, you have to pay twice.

  5. No worries, as already mentioned several times. The Gas Station took a Maximum amount of 120€ from your bank but only charges the amount you really used (18€).

    No need to contact your bank

  6. This is common in Austria, before you start fueling the machine ask you how much is the maximum you will fuel up, 20€, 40€, 80€, 120€. If you press 120€ they will check if your card could hold this amount or your bank will decline it. It could happen that your bank balance is 40€ but you fuel over it so the gas station will loose money. In fact you paid 18€, right after you paid this 120€ security payment is removed instantly. Source: I live in Austria and fuel my car everyday with this system 🙂

  7. Hey, its just a ammount of money that is held and reserved on your card
    They wont charge you only what you „consumed“
    Its a fucked up system bc if you have a daily or weekly limit you are not going to be able to spend the 100€ they „hold“
    Until the bank processes the 18€ gas fill
    Note, always go to the counter or pay cash!

  8. Seems all fine, dont worry about it. Check in 1-2 days and you will see you get 102€ refunded.

    When refueling at a vending machine filling station, an amount of money must be reserved in the account in advance to ensure payment after refueling. This is usually 120 to 130 euros. This “reservation amount” does not correspond to the actual fuel total. If the reservation is canceled again after a few days, this amount may not be available in the account for a while. References to this internationally common “pre-authorization” are not always immediately apparent at the fuel terminals.

  11. Absolutely 0 reason to worry about this. This is a very common thing in many European countries and people are always shocked when they encounter it the first time. Me too. They just create a “pending charge”, which unfortunately not every bank handles properly or at least in a transparent way to the customer. Sometimes the bank will even send you a notification/sms the amount (120€) has been already charged and after a few days again 18€ have been charged, which would seem like 2 transactions. Completely wrong. Just relax and don’t worry.
