Dramatising would be removing the diplomats themselves. Withdrawing their families is a reasonable precaution.
The whole withdrawals are just posturing for domestic politics anyway. The Russian Armies aren’t going anywhere.
I’m not saying that they wouldn’t, I’m saying that if they were willing to go for it right now, they already would have. The moment for action has passed, the opportunity is gone, at this point it makes no more strategic sense, and Putin is a *very* experienced Cold Warrior.
Conquerers need to move fast. They need to maintain speed & momentum until they hit the point of consolidation, to get stuck in & lose it means to fall apart. Russia knows this, there are reasons why Soviet & Russian tanks usually can move only forwards at more than walking pace.
This whole thing is about optics & making sure this cannot be spun to look like Afghanistan, in case someone gets caught in between when the partisan proxies go at each other, by making it excesively clear that the government told you way ahead of time to get out.
It’s just domestic politics CYA at its finest.
