We know the hash rates and we can probably make pretty good estimations as to mining efficiency because I assume the dominant miners are overwhelmingly going to be using the most efficient available hardware.
But that’s good for a global estimation while this article is specifically about estimating the consumption of only one specific country, in this case the US. And I have no idea how easy it is to accurately identify hash shares by country of origin.
