DAKAR, Senegal — Russian soldiers arrived in Niger this week, according to Nigerien state television, less than one month after the military junta [announced that it was ending military agreements ](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/03/16/niger-junta-end-us-military/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2)with the United States.
Russian soldiers in military fatigues said in the report that they would be providing training and equipment — specifically air defense system equipment — to the Nigerien military. Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with [Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/07/28/niger-coup-tchiani-bazoum/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4) on March 26 and discussed increasing their cooperation, particularly on security matters, the state television report said. Tchiani ousted Niger’s democratically elected president in a coup last year.
Video footage showed an airplane with a Russian flag on its wing that was identified as landing in Niamey, the capital, on Wednesday night. A man wearing a camouflage uniform and a neck gaiter who was identified as a “Russian military instructor” said his group had arrived “to train the Nigerien army, using the military materials that arrived here.”
The Russian deployment is part of a pattern in the region but is particularly significant in Niger, which until the coup was a strong Western ally on security issues. The Sahelian countries of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have in recent years been racked by violence linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, and military juntas have mounted coups against democratically elected leaders, citing the security situation.
The juntas’ rhetoric trumpets sovereignty and a rejection of France, their former colonial power, and they have increasingly looked to Russia and other partners for help on security matters. In Mali, more than 1,000 Russian soldiers have been fighting alongside the army, while Burkina Faso welcomed Russian trainers earlier this year.

Has the cold war really ended?
Whelp, enjoy your Russian servitude.
You may think it liberating now, but your children will despise your very names in the future.
Just ask the Poles, or Latvians, or Ukrainians, for any other people who have ever fallen under Russian control.
When the US leaves your country and Russia enters tell me how that’s a good thing.
Russians can’t even defend Moscow with their “air defense” equipment.
Damn, I’m in the air force right now and our squadron SEL was literally one of the first people setting up the bases there.
The US poured so much money into the area. They spent months building wells for the local area because Niger didn’t even have the equipment to drill deep enough.
Hope they enjoy Russia
“Russian soldiers in military fatigues said in the report that they would be providing training and equipment“
Unless Nigerien soldiers want to be experts in suiciding by grenade and blowing their own brains out, they’d best canvas the planet for actual warriors to do the training and not degenerate murder hobos.
LOL. Wait until they see what having Russia as an “ally” is like.
Guess Niger is lost. Protect the rest of our influence in Africa.
Seems like some developing countries prefer out right exploitation as opposed to the Western way of pissin’ on their back and tellin’ them it’s raining.
I wonder if that plane had working brakes.
At least the check engine light.
Cant wait when they come again asking for money. And we EU in our infinite wisdom will give it.
It’s quite funny who russia says that their military are an honourable people but they always cover their faces like a criminals, who they actually are
bbbbut our uranium ooooh nooooo
Russia scores another colony. How long until a coup or ethnic cleanings?
Well these guys hit the lottery
I bet that plane behind them is just full of aloe vera for their inevitable sun burns.
How stoked are these fellas to be in Niger and not Donbas?
I just want this war to be over as soon as possible. More and more countries are getting involved in this war.
No one wants a war. Every time a war ends, politicians shake hands and businessmen make a lot of money. Only the mothers of the soldiers and civilians hugged the tombstones and cried.
Russia has started a new world war and the world should react accordingly.
Give Ukraine Patriots!
I love how they still want to hide their identity and wear masks. lol like why at this point? It’s so strange
Afrika korps at is finest, fucking nazi cosplayers.
Financially Niger is circling the drain. Their expenditures are $600 million less than revenue. Uranium ore is their major valuable export which Russia doesn’t need. The majority (1/3) of their exports go to a country they just told to fuck off and the same with their imports.
Niger is also one of the nations that is going to be adversely affected by climate change and has “chronic food insecurity” that is only going to get worse as the climate changes and droughts get worse.
Rough days ahead for Niger.
Chances are they are there to destabilize the region from US control. Their main export is gold, but the key is that there is a US drone base in Niger with aspirations of placing subsequent drone bases in Cote d’Ivoire, Benin, and Ghana. They recently and abruptly broke off US relations. It’s in Russia’s interests to make sure that the current junta solidifies power.
I’m a bit surprised they have soldiers to spare…
If they’re relying on Russia, Is they are going to have serious internal security issues.
They are also going to find out the new boss is a lot worse than the old boss ever was.
So those 4 Green Berets died for nothing
I encourage the Nigerien military junta to lean on Russian military support as much as possible. I’m sure this will work out very well for them and has little chance of backfiring.
Oh yes. Here comes stability and prosperity /s
RIP Nigers resources
Sucks that Niger has traded one colonial power for another.
Just getting started really…
How long before they get sent off on false promises only to die in the Ukraine war?
They will be shipped off to Ukraine as canon fodder.
