Alan Bates says ‘harm and injustice’ inspired his Post Office Horizon scandal campaigning

Once he saw the ‘harm and injustice’ to people working in the Post Office, Alan Bates had to dedicate part of his life to campaigning about the Horizon IT scandal, he told an inquiry.

Bates, a former post office operator, was played by the actor Toby Jones in the ITV hit drama Mr Bates vs the Post Office, which portrayed the victims’ fight for justice.

It is the likes of Alan bates that gives me hope and belief we still 'have' intelligent, stoic and very decent people in our country that so sadly seems to be going, especially with those like Vennells and Dyson who obtain high positions and authority over us. I truly hope this enquiry will lead to Vennells and many others going to prison fro a very long time.

  4. There's one point on accounting coding systems. I'd attended a course run by the ACA in the mid-80s, as I was getting involved in accounting for one of the first non-Stochastic hedging systems, professionally, and needed to know the norms.
    What might lie behind this is a form of batch accounting concept. The Law requires that accounting records be retained for 6 years, and in practice the requirements for annual reporting mean the reporting cycle is shorter still, locking in a position as reported and audited and then connecting that string of pearls with detailed annual accounts. Large companies do this on an ongoing 6 month cycle, or even monthly, which is where the issues reported may stem from. Are they actually doing it on a monthly or even weekly basis, and losing the full audit from previously as a result?

  9. interesting his statement was 59 pages and one of the PO's investigators was 1 1/2 pages, his coviction to get to the truth under great odds in my mind deserves a knighthood.
