Check if there’s an angry submariner under the decking.
Air vent for an old bomb shelter?
My first thought was that it could be sewer or septic tank vent, but I’d expect it to be much higher if so. Do you have any manholes or inspection plates in your garden?
Fence
Soil pipe vent?
Soil vent pipe. Leave it alone unless there’s a vent elsewhere on the soil system.
Could be a vent for an old tip. Nowadays, they tend to be left as green spaces, but, depending on how old your house is, it may have been built on one.
Also may be something to do with the Underground system? Is it not noted in the deeds/land survey/utility drawings of your house?
Know as a “stink pipe”. It’s a vent from the sewer.
Good grief, are we allowed to post unsolicited deck pics in here 😱😂
Looks like a Victorian stink pipe, vents gases from the sewer.
Periscope
Who knows what lies beneath?
Stink pipe.
It’s a siphon vent. Looks to be on the boundary of your property which makes sense. It allows gases from the siphon to escape. Most late 1800 early 1900s houses had them if they had a single line sewer leading to the end of their property. Back then, they helped keep rats away from properties, these days the siphons get blocked with wet wipes and tampons… Have a guess what my job is?
Looks like you might have a small colony of goths living under your garden. They’re harmless enough, you might be able to coax them out during the day if you play some Bauhaus or Sisters of Mercy.
periscope from the failed German naval invasion in ww2
Das Boot!
Uboat under your garden
It might be a glory hole. You just need to be brave enough.
It’s a periscopic mouthpiece connected to the netherworld below.
Have you only just moved in or did it appear overnight? If the latter it’s probably molemen.
It’s the vent for your toilet pipe. It equalises the air pressure either side of the toilet S-bend.
If you block it up, you’ll get poos flowing back out of the loo onto your bathroom floor when you flush.
It’s where you post your letters…
Maybe a Septic tank vent ?- as its not near the house ?
Murderhole airvent
That my friend is a German U-Boat.
If you carefully excavate with a cotton bud and a teaspoon you’ll eventually uncover the whole thing.
There is the potential for some of the ordinance to still be live so go careful or get help from a scout leader of vicar.
Lots of these things ended up in Ealing during the particularly wet winter of 41….leaving the Thames and moving undercover of darkness between puddles, ponds and the open sewers of Kensington South and Bromley which still exist today.
If any German sailors are still inside they will likely remind you if you are old enough of the DON’T TELL HIM PIKE episode of Dad’s Army.

Stench pipe. Let’s air up from the sewer.

Try peeing down it and see if anyone complains.
