I can't believe the size of that thing. It's 5x the size of the other wasp.

Judging by the orange color lf the face i think it's one of of those japanese hornets, am i right ?

Thing sounded like a boeing 777 taking off

Normal was for comparison.

  1. You killed it? WtF. Could have been a European hornet or a wasp queen. Difficult to tell from the pictures. Next time, plastic cup, trap it, and cardboard underneath and set it free

  2. Looks like a European hornet. Its actually a very useful species (e.g. hunts wasps) and its protected.

  3. yeah looks like a hornet. take a look at the outside of your windows and make sure that there is no nest… will get uncomfortable once you have a whole regiment of them buzzing around

  4. No, that’s our regular native hornet. It’s a queen though, those are bigger than normal workers. They are currently flying and trying to find a good spot for this year’s nest.

  5. Just want to say, while these hornets look super scary, they are pretty friendly and not aggressive at all. They don’t usually sting humans unless you hurt them or try to destroy their nest.

  6. That’s a European hornet. They get defensive but generally aren’t aggressive.

Buuuut yea they can stay the hell outta my house, they’re scary.

  7. Hornet probably. I once lived two weeks in a house that had a nest somewhere close, it was hell, we had about 5 to 10 in the apartment at all times. Impossible to eat in peace, they always came buzzing around the table and getting on sweet things and meat. One night I was drying my laundry and when I checked whether it was dry, I touched one of those beasts accidentally, it immediately stinged my finger. Hurt like hell for 30min and swell, then it got quickly better. I know they are protected and having one once in a while is ok, but I would not like to have a nest of them somewhere close. Not because they are aggressive by nature, but you have to always watch out where they could be (inside fruits, in the grass, humid clothes, in the kitchen, next to the garbage) to not surprise them. I also have traumatic fear of bees and other stuff getting stuck in my hair because that happened once to me and it also stinged me in fear, nothing one could do.

  8. Called european hornet, in Hungarian “lódarázs” (literally: horse wasp – because of the size). Yep, don’t go nearby, but usually not that aggressive.

  9. They’re pretty chill actually, they come in peace – unlike wasps. 😛

  10. we had a hornets nest in the garden for one year. No other insects. It was wonderful.
