Hang on, so “isn’t compatible with the Irish legal system” basically means “we can’t legalise drugs, they’re illegal!”
#legaliseKetamine
Citizens Assembly cmon lets do it lets go
Too much money being made from the illegality of drugs: Garda, drug squads, solicitors, court staff, TDs pretending to be tough on crime…. and around and around we go, time and time again. Just go and follow the Portuguese model like you said you were going to do 6 years ago and make a fucking decision.
Feighan has always been a gombeen of the premier variety, not surprised to hear him come out with that sort of drivel.
Why is Frank Feighan still our ‘drugs minister’ after saying that most of RTE are off their tits on coke?
And why is RTE looking for a hike in licence fees atm?
> THE MINISTER OF State with responsibility for drugs policy, Frank Feighan, has apologised after claiming that public officials and people in RTÉ are “snorting cocaine all over the place”.
He knows what his buddies are up to
Well, well, well.
The truth be out.
They don’t care what people want.
Self serving.
Realistically it should be legalised and taxed to help fund addiction and recovery services. I can’t see the absolute shambles of a government doing anything about it though
Too many old boys in Irish politics, have such a close minded view on what’s right and what’s wrong. With a little lift off blaming them, they were also raised like that and know no better but that’s no excuse for not opening up to new discussions or being an arsehole
This the same elderly beating Frank Feighen ? Shocked that he would lie about something like this.
I would presume it depends on how you want to decriminalise it. If you’re talking about a system like Portugal that involves the health boards, I can see why it would pose a difficulty. On the other hand, simply taking cannabis off the list for simple possession charges would probably only require a small amendment to existing legislation.
It is because the dude responsible for making the call is a prohibitionist. Remember folks, prohibition is a child’s view of morality.
Decriminalising drugs isn’t compatible with Irish Publicans. FTFY.
Not a hope of it happening with the current shower, government don’t want to lose the Midlands Mary still loves the angelus votes.
oh wont somebody please think of the pub owners.
How incompatible could it be when they decriminalised them once by accident!
Imagine all the income lost by vulturous solicitors and barristers, prosecuting and defending people charged with drug possession. Can’t be having that. Same goes for family law. Updating these things would simplify and balance everything out. Legal fees depend on deep divides in power and esteem.
I think the alcohol and tobacco companies are paying them off to keep it illegal.
it’s completely irresponsible of government
decriminalisation and legalisation are two different things but if government embraced cannabis cultivation it would create jobs, careers and safety standards for what is already a wildly popular and regularly consumed substance
Frank Feighan is a very strange and unpleasant seeming man. Ranks up there with Norma Foley in the “hang on what year is it??” league
Even Thailand is ahead of us on this. I know everything moves very, very slowly in Ireland, but come on, enough of tolerating this nonsense from ye olde guard.
And the cops pissing about after people over a bit of weed instead of doing their fucking job catching real criminals
Smacking aul lads, however, is very much compatible with the Irish legal system if Feighan is anything to go by
Where oh where do I remember the name Frank Feighan from?
“It’s not compatible with how we traditionally win votes.”

Does anyone else find it bizarre when you hear the words ‘junior minister’ and then see 68 year old man appear? It bothers the fuck out of me.
Imagine you got a promotion at work and your new job was to make recommendations to improve a vital part of your business that is consistently underperforming for years. Your department is losing money, missing every minimum target set for it, it’s hurting innocent people, helping criminals steal from you and alienating your customers. It’s damaging your business.
You have access to case studies, examples of proven solutions, expert advice gathered over decades from all over the world.
And every time the boss asks you for ideas you say “Ah sure, leave it alone. Be grand. Pay me now”
And you still have a job.
Germany is about to legalise weed – everyone else in the EU will follow. Drug laws are so anachronistic and overly moralistic. Also as a high performing professional with almost 30 years of cannabis consumption under my belt, why should I feel criminalised when endemic alcohol abuse is still de rigeur in Ireland?
Okay so who in government is either
1. In the pocket of the Chinese triad, legalizing drugs in Ireland wouldn’t benefit them.
Or
2. Is in the pocket of some American corporations who have plans to sell here legally and the law will magically change when they’re ready to open shop?
I just don’t get it. “No, I don’t want hundreds of millions in tax revenue, instead I want to spend hundreds of millions on police and incarcerations.”
