Wild swimming would be lovely if Thames Water and other companies stopped dumping sewage in our rivers and streams. No idea if this area is affected by it.
It’s a nice idea and they’ve got some nice visualisations. But I can’t help feeling they’re never going to succeed as the location isn’t great.
Somewhere between a National Rail station no-one knows is there and Clapton Overground isn’t exactly going to pull in the volume of people you’d need.
If you want nature there’s Hackney Marshes, the Olympic Park, Walthamstow Marshes & Wetlands. Add in the fact that 5 hectares worth of redevelopment of an ex industrial site isn’t going to be cheap. That’s a lot of swims to cover redevelopment of an area about the size of the ice centre across the road which cost around £40m. And that was a rebuild of a previous one without the land clearance/cleanup.
West Resevoir is a few miles away and likely much more appealing if you want outdoor. The Aquatic Centre and the Olympic park if you want indoors, even Hollow Ponds if you want pedalos!
>Campaigners shared a letter with the *Citizen* from the DfE, dated March 2021, which states: “It has not been possible to find an educational use [for the site]. We will advertise the site to other government departments or public sector bodies.
>“If no education or public sector need is established, the department retains the option to sell the site for a commercial return.”
DfE originally couldn’t identify an educational need for the site, they talked to some other departments and now believe they can build a children’s home there.
It’s not really misleading is it. They didn’t think they could do it, they now think they can.
