She’s not wrong, is she.
Every time a report suggests decriminalisation or legalisation of drugs, it’s always ignored in favour of the status quo of prohibition
“well i think it’s an opinion”….. that means we will just go around and around repeating the same bollocks again and agin. There’s too many old bastards in the system with no idea of how to deal with this.
Old fuckers saying “i can’t believe it. We’ve done the same thing 100 times are we’re still getting the same results. Let’s try it again”…. utter insanity.
One of the best descriptions of addiction i have ever seen was that it was the commodification of human misery. Compulsive drug use is a desperate attempt to escape something, be it life itself or even just the withdrawals
Fair play to her
Calling out this bullshit of saying something is a “difference of opinion” is something I’m a fan of. Nothing will get done if you let those coffin dodgers have their way in creating legislation.
There are literally hundreds of thousands of people in this country who are recreational drug users. I’m not including alcohol. These same people carry out their lives in the same manner as non recreational drug users, yet they run the gauntlet of criminalisation and the stigma / restrictions that brings.
Prohibition has never worked, we spend millions trying to enforce a failed policy, we criminalise people for smoking a joint etc, publicly shame them for same.
If we diverted the money and energy into education, treatment and diversionary policies instead we would be in a much better place.
“we gave them the market” – well said
Frank Feighan is a fucking scumbag and his legacy will be nothing but disgrace.
Fair play Lynn, she’s spot on. I work in addiction (and sure who hasn’t dabbled in recreational use) and I agree with her 100 percent
The thing is a committee was set up, findings were explored and then they are going to chose to ignore and even act in defiance of the findings. We should look at this as if it was a health, housing, social or financial matter and investigate why this committee is clearly acting against the best interest of the public. The research, findings, statistics and facts are not an opinion. This is a total failure of their duties.

She is spot on, and to be told what she said is “her opinion” when she is backing up her statements with fact is ridiculous
This is incredible, well done to her. And my god how far removed and horrible the man responding to her was.
I just don’t understand how someone can go against the statement of “if you legalize, you take away the power from the criminals”. It’s such a no brainer to me. It’s like certain politics have an ulterior motive to fund the war on dru… hey wait a minute
It must be so infuriating to try to discuss these issues with people who are not willing to listen with an open mind
So incredibly disappointing to hear somebody who actually has true knowledge and understanding within this area to be straight up ignored by those adamant on keeping the old, outdated mantras of generations gone by. Lynn Ruane is an immensely impressive person and I do hope more like her can get a real say in the way things are done here. Have nothing but respect for her.
Wish she was in my constituency. She’s great. Just wish her voice was heard.
Great to see a bit of sense and passion amongst the old, grey, backward shitebags the poxy boomers vote in year after year.
All these old farts set in their ways about hoe the war on drugs is being won. Move aside and get people in who are actually aware of how this current world works.
Few things I hate more than a well spoken, intelligent, progressive young(ish) person putting forward solid, well thought out arguments, only for an old, stuck in their ways, inarticulate person, to stumble and bumble through their counter argument, which has no substance, and has already failed out in the real world.
Christ that guy is a condescending ballbag.
Bang on, your man is a joke. No business being there

If it can be done in Portugal, it can be done in Ireland. Time for the old generation to give way to those that actually understand the logic behind the decriminalisation of drugs.
Nobody is advocating decriminalisation to increase drug abuse in society.
The whole point is that decriminalisation reduces the crime associated to drug consumption and reduces the harm inflicted on users and on society. The drugs supply chain brings nothing but misery to producer countries and consumer countries alike.
Alcohol is also dangerous and can ruin lives, yet it’s legalised.
We need total change in the area of mental health services, especially with the pandemic.
We need a much more humane system that connects people with addictions to public services that can help them address their problems so that they can start to recover.
The roots of addiction run very deep. It’s a complex societal problem and one that urgently needs to be addressed.
“It’s evidence based”
“No it’s not”
“Well my OPINION is that it’s evidence based”
How stupid can you be?
Drugs minister is soooooo out of touch it’s insane and unwilling to listen it’s depressing. You can sense the frustration and anger in Lynn Ruanes voice, the voice of someone that’s been trying to push water up a hill for many years.
