Edit: Looks like its another (Judge Sarah Berkeley)… I’ll never understood why the prospect of someone dying soon gives them a lighter sentence. Like who fucking cares? Just let them die in jail.
He should die in that prison cell. Not by anyone’s hand, but he should never be allowed out.
He destroyed his own child.
So because he’s old and in poor health, he’s only getting two and a half years.
Meanwhile they literally say how the women has faced the consequences of the abuse her entire life and is still not right.
So for all intents and purposes, he basically got away with it. Happened in the 80s, lived till his late 70s and is in such poor health he’s not even really going to jail as much as he’s going to a hospital bed.
Madness. Why not just give him something like a 10 year sentence and let him die in a prison? Why be lenient because he’s old and in poor health already?

Good thing he got the deserving sentence of….2.5 years. That’ll dissuade other criminals from doing similar acts, the harsh punishment of…2.5 years.

It genuinely mystifies me how we’re not all apparently on the same page about mandatory minimum sentences for child abuse.
Like, why aren’t we all on the streets protesting outside the Dail on this shit?

“No previous convictions” is only a defense for a one off crime that you can argue is out of character for the defendant. And not if that crime is rape. Getting in a fight, theft, something like that, sure, fine whatever.
He raped a child. For 2 years. He is a child rapist. That is who he is at his very core. He will never be “better”.
