Portuguese and French at a disadvantage: Study highlights wage disparities among nationalities in Luxembourg

  1. So, from what I’ve read I don’t really see what the issue is.

At first I thought employers were underpaying portuguese and french nationals because of their nationality. Negotiating down the wage because “they get less on their home countries anyway”

But, according to the article, this is the percentage of minimum wage earners by country of origin.

If immigrants from french or portuguese backgrounds are, on average, less educated, it’s only normal more will receive minimum wage.

I’m portuguese myself and I don’t receive minimum wage because I had the luck of having access to a great education which includes a master’s degree. My mum, unfortunately, didn’t. Back when she was growing up going to university was a rarity in Portugal. She didn’t even attend secondary school (she only has the 9th grade).

So, she is a minimum wage worker. It’s really just how it is.

  2. correlation doesn’t lead to causation.
if you really need to play racism card, saying Luxembourgish has a higher salary than other nationalities may be more compelling
