Ah here an event that brings massive international interest to the region. The government has made a balls of this one.
I’d wonder if the event was based around Kells, Drogheda, and other towns in north Meath would he have dropped the ball so badly
Unfortunately, motorsports really is at the mercy of local government a lot of the time.
Seems a bit like hosting major sporting events isn’t a high priority, especially in the less popular sports. America’s Cup was another major event we missed out on.
We really are a fucking laughing stock
A government of morons. The minister should be sacked, you don’t pass on something like this.
Does this mean no motorboating?
Useless, good for nothing, wage thieving bastards.
If it was horse racing or GAA, or even a bloody American Football event they’d be lining up in Government to get a picture shaking hands with each other for organising it.
This event would have been hugely profitable and would have been nice after we lost Craig to bring the WRC back to Ireland. Minister Byrne is incompetent but I am sure other countries will dive at the chance to host and make a fortune off this.
The sooner Thomas Byrne out of the picture the better. He has been very bad in his short term as minister for sport. Jack Chambers was very open to different sports outside of the usuals and since Byrne came in we’ve already pulled out of hosting the Tour de France and now the WRC. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cyclo-Cross world cup event gets cancelled too.
He’s an Irish aul-fella. The GAA and Cheltenham is his sporting interest portfolio.
I’m relieved, had loads of former employees of mine tell me they wanted to bring me to the WRC but I’m just not into rallying!
Really shame. My kids are a little too young for it yet. But I do have a little dream of taking them to the rally in donegal or Galway just so they can see the cars flying around super fast.
My son is car mad and would absolutely love it.
A proper WRC stage here would have been fantastic. We have narrow, winding, bumpy backroads, put in a dirt section. Some of those awful condition roads out in Kerry with grass growing up the middle would be amazing to see big name drivers, in proper rally cars on.
Even doing it with a partial section up north and another in the south. Some kind of Monaghan/Tyrone based course.
Would have definitely brought in some tourism to areas that don’t get much of it otherwise.
Minister for sport must have holes in his head or something. Literally a no brainer for the economy and further exposure for Irish tourism
Discussions to bring the Tour de France back to Ireland reached pretty advanced stages. Cycling Ireland were on board, the Tour de France were on board. Sponsors were lined up. But the government didn’t want anything to do with it. It would have been such an easy win for them. Wouldn’t have cost too much money and would have brought a lot of attention and tourists. Shame
Unbelievable, yet another example of incompetence from a failing government.
I’m disappointed but not surprised
They’re not getting a fat enough brown envelope out if it and the GAA aren’t involved. Always going to happen
We are the Irish ruling class and we hate excitement and fun. LOL
Yet horse and greyhound racing get big payouts.
Would’ve brought employment and money to the south east and all.
Total fucking farce. If I understand this properly Motorsport Ireland requested funding from the goverment, they gave them zero response and the proposal hit the deadline at the end of March.
Rally is the biggest motorsport in the country this could’ve pulled in millions, and the government is too incompetent to see that.
Don’t forget they let road racing die too,

Allegedly it’s not entirely on the government. Motorsport Ireland made shite of the application and used false economic projections.
I don’t think it’s too conspiracy-theory to say that the govt has no interest in promoting rallying (or any motorsport) at the same time as road deaths are on the up. The Greens are probably dead set against it too because it’s petrol cars going fast & therefore shouldn’t be encouraged.
I’d have loved it. Circuit of Ireland passed my house a few years back in the late 80s or early 90s. Still remember impossibly fast Celicas and loads of Mk2 Escorts.
I wish non Motorsport fans realise this is the equivalent of losing the world cup. Massive financial blow. Unbelievable lost opportunity. Horse racing gets 100m a year. This was only costing 15. Minister should be sacked.
My family is living near the Red Bull Ring in austria, and the F1 race brings in so much money every year, so do the other motorsport events, how could the government turn that idea down. i really dont get it
This really sucks
Probably for the best the last time they held the WRC rally they put it in Sligo mostly and avoided the world famous Donegal rally stages which was insane. Like having a rally in North Cork instead of around the Lakes.
