Too low. Should be higher.
This article makes me feel dumber just for having read it.
First of all, who the fuck is saying that only 50,000 Russians have died in this war?
Second, fatalities are not casualties. You can’t compare a 50,000 fatality estimate or any other fatality estimate to the total casualty estimates, which are in the 400 thousands and may even be pushing half a million by now.
Can I just repeat that again?
Fatalities are not casualties.
Fatalities are not casualties.
Fatalities are not casualties.
Fatalities are not casualties.
Now look. If total Russian casualties are reaching 500,000, *there is no possible way on Earth* that total Russian fatalities are only 50,000. There is no way. Not with massed human waves, and with wounded being abandoned to die as a matter of policy.
We know those things are happening. They are not imaginary things or things we are assuming or supposing. And any world in which those things are happening is a world in which the fatality fraction of total casualties is not 1/10.
Which it is not for Russia. Not no how.
50,000 is such a ridiculous number that I can only see this as a deliberately planted article intended to sow uncertainty and doubt.
Wagner deaths alone was confirmed at 11,000. No way russian meatwaves for the last two years would total only some 20,000 dead/year.
500 000 maybe
To be clear, the BBC article references a very high confidence low estimate, they are able to identify the names of individuals killed, they aren’t talking about wounded, only named dead which have been identified.
Take the article for what it is, a robust low estimate, yes the true figure is perhaps an order of magnitude greater, this article does serve to keep in the minds of the average consumer the toll of Putins genocide on both sides.
BBC at this stage of the game is just not worth listening to. They say stuff like this just to get people talking about them.
It’s probably more accurate if you take that figure as the figure for March.
Also, ruzzia lies about everything!
For those who will only read the headline and not the actual article –
This number of 50,000 is what they have confirmed. (i.e. they have 50,000 names of confirmed KIA). This only includes number from the Russian Army (Wagner, Convict detachements, LPR and DPR are not counted).
The article states that the real number of fatalities is MUCH higher.
Basically what this article is saying is that if you get estimates of the amount of fatalities the Russian have faced, the smallest number you can use is 50,000 (not 0).
Best to stick to standard injured to killed ratios.
In ww1 and ww2 it was 3 injured for every death when calculating casualties. Vietnam was also 3:1 and the war in Afghanistan was 7:1.
It’s hard to know what the Russian figures are. Maybe 5:1 but at minimum it’s 4:1. What’s certain is that Russia has extensively improved its medical facilities for soldiers as the war has progressed. The Ukrainians have also improved by a similar degree.
We have all seen videos of Russian meat waves, with guys on vehicles getting blown up by drones, but they are likely not the norm for Russian army tactics. Simple mathematics dedicate this. If we double oryx figures for APC,IFV vehicles, we get 4000 destroyed. If we get 6 deaths per vehicle we have a total of 24000 deaths. Which is way shorter than the number of deaths associated in these channels. It’s important not to get carried away with what see in videos. The Russian telegram channels show similar videos. Both sides are guilty of selective showings
Total figures for Russia are likely about 120,000 deaths. Based on a 4:1 ratio
In reality a seriously injured soldier for Russia is worse than a dead soldier. Wounded soldiers are far more a financial burden
Maybe 50k this year?
They’ve missed a 0. It’s more like 400-500 thousand.
Well why write this article that’s a fraction of ukraines estimate, except to be a Russian shill
There was one video awhile back where a truck just dumps dozen corpses of russian soldiers in an unknown location. Yeah it’s higher.
Insane , 50K dead in just 2 years of fighting. In this what modern warfare will look like when near peer enemies fight? I wonder if western nations could take these losses and stil continue to fight
And 450,000 missing
Yeah, sure sure
Maybe 50k bodies moved back to Mordor, 450k rotting in Ukraine
It’s much much much much much more than that.
Very low figure.
300K+
LOL
Try closer to half a million
So what? They ain’t gonna affect their morale along with their advances. Shells and weapons are the things that needed to stop their advances. Even they lost 2 times more, they will still tried to advance. At this point, shells are more valuable than their soldiers.
Again. The russians don’t care. They can play the manpower attrition game. Ukraine cannot
