North Korea’s dictators – The power of the Kim dynasty | DW Documentary

North Korea. Geographically small, it nonetheless looms large in the geopolitical consciousness. The country is isolated, its population desperately poor. The Kim dynasty has ruled for three generations. How does this ruling family manage to make its power felt around the world?

The nuclear program is central to North Korea’s strategy. For decades, the regime devoted increasingly large amounts of its resources to acquiring the bomb. Then, in 2006, North Korea detonated a nuclear bomb for the first time. It was a signal to the world: North Korea was a force to be reckoned with.

The Kim dynasty has also acquired strong partners. China regards the country as a military buffer zone and keeps it heavily dependent on its economy. With China in its corner, North Korea is not intimidated by the United States. Now, North Korea is also allying with Russia and supporting it in the war against Ukraine.

Propaganda, intimidation and surveillance form the pillars of North Korean society. The state’s top-secret structures are largely opaque because the country has been hermetically sealed off from the outside world. The Kim dynasty began with regime founder Kim Il-sung, who was in power from 1948 to 1994. Creating a unique cult of personality, he built a regime according to his own ideas. After his death, his son Kim Jong-Il was in charge until his death 2011. Then, Kim Jong-Il’s son, Kim Jong-un, took over the leadership position. Should Kim Jong-un die, his sister or daughter are considered his likeliest successors.

The North Korean government exercises total control over the country and its population. With the help of a comprehensive surveillance system, the state engages in extreme repression, using everything from intimidation to prison camps and death sentences to keep its people in check.

With the help of leading experts, including former officials of the Pyongyang regime, the film analyzes the strategies deployed by the North Korean government.

  1. It's crazy because those people are legitimately crying in the audience. They truly love their leader so deeply it is like a sickness that controls them and their emotions. They truly are crying.

  2. Like in a USSR, if ur neighbor was caught and sentenced for some potential thoughts, beware, u are under the thread as well because u lived nearby and didn't notice

  3. Lies lies lies.
    DPRK is a socialist country.
Dictatorship is the whole west, killing millions having wars.
    People suffer under liberalism.

  4. North Korea was created immediately after world war two? Same as U.N., Israel, NATO, C.I.A., Allies and the various Interpol Alliances. Moscow too? It was all about Budapest, Tibet, Morocco, Brazil and North America. After the other great war.

  5. perhaps noorth korea has the best parade in the world😅
but it felt something really weird is going on, in that country

  6. Kim Yo Jong looks so terrifying. There is something in Her face. She looks like a stone cold killer.
She could be a perfect villian actress in a horror movie.

  7. We, as Western slaves of the usury system, are living the 'democracy dream'. We need stories like 'Bad North Korea' to keep us happy just like they have the Kims illusion. Keep dreaming while more and more people are shopping in the Western Food Banks of charity with 0-hour contracts.😊

  8. I am Commissioner yet only in my mind.
Tristate Agenda, and an American one too. So there are two Tristate Agendas. Each with same goal. This is why I write. I only imagine? Cyber security knows my plan. Already and again – Commish

  9. Dictatorship must ALWAYS be condemned! And having said that… how come every time I see footages of their cities, the buildings are completely clean outside without graffited inscriptions, or their subways are clean, organized and – most important – never crammed with people ? Is this only in the capital ? Maybe. But in many countries I visited even the capitals doesn´t look like that. Does anyone here know for a fact how are the conditions in the villages ? And other important thing: how North Korea deals with narcotrafic and drug users ? Is drug a menace there as it is in latin America ? Congrats DW for the video.

  10. Commish- I have drunk many thousands of dollars of beers. People must know what it means to drink yourself half dead on purpose. That was quite sime time ago in the past however. Energy, good, bad , expensive, poor, dangerous, fun, safe positive or evil; it exists. I have one purpose and with a great objective securely in my past what I seek is simple. Thats why , its not brain damage when you think I am painfully bashful; its me turning you back around. Too far is too close.

  11. Korea and its leadership family are just like the uk and many other royal family.
no difference at all…well….what does the royal family actually do thats worth while to the public as a hole….not just a few?

  13. Trump era. US military was considering withdrawing from South Korea. However, South Korea cried and begged the US. And continues to the present.
