All of us have read about people behaving poorly while visiting the camps. So I am gonna be honest and admit I am surprised this is making international news. If asked an hour ago, I would have bet that such incidents happen twice weekly at least. I would actually believe a Nazi salute would happen every day there, because so many people feel comfortable to be half defiant half joking nowadays.

She explains it as a bad joke. Sure. To visit Auschwitz, see the place, and then pose for a photo? That is beyond a joke. It is a nasty statement and one she was obviously going to share with people. A fine feels like a light punishment for an act so stupid and harmful.
