TV presenter Timmy Mallett has continued his charity cycle around Northern Ireland by facing some of the complexities faced by residents living along the Donegal-Fermanagh border.
The 68-year-old, best known for hosting children’s programmes such as Wide Awake Club and Wacaday, is raising funds in memory of his late brother Martin, who had Down Syndrome.
Upon arriving in the town of Pettigo, which spans both Counties Donegal and Fermanagh, Mr Mallett documented his experience on TikTok, highlighting the confusion and complications arising from the town’s unique position.
“This is the town of Pettigo in County Donegal,” Mallett said, pointing his camera to the left, “And this is the town of Pettigo in County Fermanagh,” he added, pointing in the opposite direction.
Throughout his visit, Mallett encountered several residents whose homes and properties straddle the border.
One woman’s house, built in the north, has a garden located in the Republic.
“That is bonkers,” Mallett remarked.
Additionally, the woman’s electricity is supplied by the Republic, while her neighbour’s is provided by the north.
Mr Mallett also met a homeowner who parked his car directly on the border to speak with him.
“I am sitting on the border now. Me, in the front seat, is in the UK and the passengers in the back are in the Republic of Ireland,” the man told Mr Mallett.
The TV presenter’s journey, which began at Paddington Station in London last year, has covered over 5,000 miles and aims to raise awareness and funds for Down Syndrome charities.

Timmy Mallett has now done more research into the British border’s partition and its effects on Ireland than the entire British Government did before Brexit. He is now regarded as Britain’s foremost expert in EU and ROI / NI Border affairs and is highly touted to land a consultancy position within Westminster.
He is due to appear to give evidence of his findings at the next Commons Select Committee hearing on cross border trade.
