Postcode lottery for NHS vasectomies is outdated, unfair and sexist, say men denied the ‘snip’

  1. Yea see I managed to get my vasectomy at 25, whereas I have defo seen on Reddit a lot of way older people even now struggle to get one.

  2. It is outdated, unfair and sexist.

Not everyone can afford £600 if they’re in an area that isn’t funded, and trying to push responsibility onto women is ridiculously sexist.

Maternity care costs more than £600, its a very shortsighted view.

  3. > Many, like Pank, want to share the burden of responsibility for contraception with their partners. And a growing number want to limit the size of their family – or avoid having children altogether – for environmental reasons. A study in 2017 showed having one fewer child was the most effective way to fight climate change, with a greater impact than avoiding flights or a vegetarian diet.

Yes but ageing population…industrialisation…I find this point of view rather facile

  4. Article about a man in Oxford, no snips are free.

Photo in front of HMS Victory in Pompey, where snips are free.

    Poor choice of image.

Also, fun fact, local anesthetics don’t work for me. I thought they just wore off quickly, but as an adult, I have learned they don’t do anything at all. I learned this during my vasectomy.

  5. Feel quite glad my snip was free on the NHS after a referral to Marie Stopes in Manchester.

Few friends of mine haven’t had much luck either and the women I know who’ve been trying to get their ovaries removed due to crippling PCOS issues get condescension at every possible opportunity.

It’s unreal that the opinion of a hypothetical future male partner and their fertility comes a country mile before their own comfort.

Shouldn’t be this hard to opt out of reproducing, whether purposefully or accidentally. If people don’t want kids, then they should be allowed to rather than dealing with a postcode lottery or some moralising doctor giving them the “you never know” spiel.

How it’s considered “too early” and “life changing” to get sterilised yet having a child receives a round of applause is beyond me.

  6. How about putting more money and research in temporary male birth control? The fact that the only options are condoms or a vasectomy is absolutely ridiculous. One is not that effective (87% with typical use) and the other is basically permanent. What’s happening with the gel blockages etc?

  7. Had no idea, I’d have assumed the snip was just a universal day-case type outpatient thing that your GP would make a simple referral for in all cases if requested.

  8. I thought kids were outrageously expensive for the state in terms of all the benefits for the parents, education etc.

Seems such a ridiculously good return on investment. And that £600 includes all the profit of he private sector. Nuts.

  9. I honestly hope Vasalgel gets approval. It would be a much better solution for male contraception, less invasive, non-hormonal, and reversible.

  10. Postcode lotteries are real? Thought it was just a saying. Why not just move temporarily or give a family member or friend’s address?

  11. I was livid when I found out we’d have to go private for a vasectomy, which we can’t justify the cost of. Our only contraceptive option is condoms and I hate them (I’m the woman by the way). We have far less sex because of them, because they seem to give me UTIs (never a problem before using them). It impacted my mental health a lot initially, which of course costs the nhs in other ways. It’s probably not even £600 for the nhs to do them, that’s the private cost including a profit for them.

  12. Try getting funding for physical care at home. That’s lottery based too and anti-disability.

Does anyone else think that the whole thing needs a rethink?

  13. With a rapidly declining birth rate shouldn’t we stop offering it for free?

It is a bit of a vanity offering from the NHS. I don’t want my taxes subsidising that shit.

We have stockmarkets and property markets to prop up here.

  14. Can’t you just pay for it yourself? I get the need that it works out cheaper for the state to give these treatments but we can’t even get cancer treatment right so tbh imo it shouldn’t be a priority for the NHS. Harsh but unfortunately that’s the NHS we have….

  15. I booked an appointment for initial consultation in November 2019, first available date was August 2020, which was cancelled for obvious reasons. They got back in touch with me in August 2021 to see if I was still interested… life’s too short

  16. Both myself and my dad have the same issue. The anaesthetic doesn’t work. I discovered this when I broke my nose and had it reset.
