University of Manchester students say “I don’t feel safe” over ‘unfair’ rules

  1. i think hes overreacting a little bit, the precautions are in place and they cant wait until covid is gone to do their exams

  2. I didn’t think this sub allowed posts from MEN? At least that’s the automated response I got when I tried to post something a while back

  3. Everyone has a right to express their views and opinions as they are based on their own experiences and fears.

However – at the same time – my opinion is that whilst Covid has brought on social changes that will never be reversed (such as remote working) there has to start being moves back in some ways to pre-pandemic life. Covid will likely be around for years yet and whilst the evidence is early, it is appearing to become a virulent but less lethal virus.

Whilst the centre of this article Matthew doesn’t say this himself, I have seen repeated student associations and representatives of that demographic raise concerns about paying high tuition fees for remote working and that students need social interaction and in person classes. Furthermore I have seen commentators bemoan that young people are missing ‘the best years of their lives’ by not being able to socialise in clubs and bars etc.

There cannot be a narrative of having students back in campus and enjoying nightlife, but at the same raising fears about exams. It’s inconsistent.

Yes absolutely understand that people have concerns and also manage this through health and safety steps, but life is now continuing and getting back to aspects of pre-pandemic. Risks are inherent everywhere and unfortunately this is a life lesson for many in their formative years

  4. And what of those who feel it unfair that they’re paying their tuition fees while being holed up in their room doing all lectures over Zoom, missing out on all the fun social elements of uni life that they’ll never get another chance to experience? Honestly I feel gutted for those who started Uni only to find themselves in lockdown for nearly all their time there.

Look, Matthew, you’re likely double-jabbed at least, you’re in the demographic that will more than likely experience zero symptoms, and almost certainly not get serious illness. If you’re feeling this uncomfortable about being around other people at this point then it’s not just simple apprehensiveness about COVID but likely something that might need a therapist. Being scared about being in an exam room because other people are there isn’t healthy.

  5. Let’s just have a solid look at a very likely possibility here with in person exams:

You’re a student, you go into a exam hall with possibly 100+ students in there with lots of different cohorts.

The chance of you catching covid is relatively high. Now if you do catch covid you’re ruled out of the exams up to 2 weeks from the onset of symptoms.

    Hardly makes sense does it?
