taking one of the most liberal legal
stances on cannabis in Europe Germany
now joins Malta and Luxembourg which
legalized recreational use in recent
years meanwhile the Netherlands famous
for its permissive attitude to the drug
has in recent years taken a stricter
approach as it cracks down on marijuana
tourism the country decriminalized
cannabis in 1976 one of the first to do
so but now new rules in the central
tourist area of Amsterdam impose a 100e
old fine rep public marijuana smoking in
the wider World recent years have seen
more and more countries legalize or
decriminalize the drug those which have
legalized it for recreational use to
some degree include Canada Mexico
Uruguay South Africa Georgia and
Thailand though the Thai government
recently announced it will ban
recreational use just two years after it
was legalized for adults meanwhile
countries which have allowed medical use
include New Zealand Argentina Lebanon
Malawi Greece and Ireland and states to
have decriminalized the drug to a
varying extent include Australia Chile
Jamaica Israel Estonia and Spain from
country to Country laws vary around the
amounts allowed in possession as well as
whether sales are permitted or only
consumption meanwhile in France it
remains illegal to produce and sell
recreational Cannabis containing THC
after a draft law on legalization was
dismissed by the National Assembly in
2022
though a government trial for medical
use is underway
Germany is set to join the global cannabis revolution on Monday, with a law coming into effect legalising recreational use of the drug. It is the first big European country to legalise the possession and consumption of small amounts of the drug by adults and one of only two among the G7 group of leading world powers, with Canada.
