Just watched Blue Eye Samurai this week, a Netflix series about a mixed-race wandering swordfighter in 1650s Japan trying to hunt down and kill their father as revenge for cursing them with a life of discrimination.

I bring this up in this subreddit of all places because the main antagonist is Northern Irish. I know the Northern Irish identity wouldn't exist for almost 300 years after this show is set, but the character (played by Kenneth Branagh) has an authentic Belfast accent, talks about living through the Tyrone Rebellion and refers to himself as both Irish and British depending on what's more appropriate.

Just thought you lovely people might be interested in this, I probably would have checked the show out sooner had I known about this.

  1. Colour me interested. I’ve heard of it but knew very little about it.

  2. >refers to himself as both Irish and British.

  3. Great show. And i say that as someone who otherwise detests and avoids anime.

  4. Kenneth Branaghs accent was shite in it. Rest of the show was great.
