***The Telegraph reports:***
The West needs a Reagan-Thatcher style leadership pairing to confront Tehran because the current policy of appeasement has failed, Iran’s exiled crown prince told The Telegraph.
Reza Pahlavi, the eldest son of the last shah of Iran, is the founder and leader of the National Council of Iran, an exiled opposition group, and a prominent critic of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s Islamic regime.
He said there had been a “weak approach” by Western leaders “on both sides of the Atlantic” towards the Islamic Republic and called for [a “reset” of Europe’s relationship with Tehran](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/04/20/israel-attack-isfahan-took-out-russian-made-air-defences/), starting with proscribing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terror organisation.
The prince, 63, also implicitly criticised Rishi Sunak for not doing enough to counter threats and intimidation of Iranian journalists based in London.
“The regime is trying to harm or threaten not only dissidents, but even British citizens,” he said,[ referring to the stabbing](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/29/iran-journalist-stabbed-london/) of Pouria Zeraati, the Iran International television host, outside his Wimbledon home last month.
What was being gained from not being “willing to respond in some form?” he asked.

Iran is pointless.
You can’t appease fundamentalist zealots, warmongering expansionists, or genocidal terrorists.
Trying to – is just enabling them.
Big shock there. NOT!!!!!
Serious question.
You think this guy becomes king when Iran overthrows the Ayatollah or do they sidestep the monarchy entirely and become a secular Republic?

Stop expecting irrational actors to be rational actors
Lol, this isn’t serious, right?
Where is the appeasement that you speak of, o crown prince
Appease on, guys
The Shah of Iran has been quoted to say “I’ll tell you one thing and I’m not ashamed to say it, my estimation of Ayatollah Khamanei as a man just fucking plummeted.”
If only history had any lessons for us around appeasement.
History proves: Appeasement *never* works.
Tend to agree with him, but exiled monarchs are not renowned for their sober, bitterness-free assessments of the country, prestige and lifestyle they’ve been denied
Not just Iran, but Russia and China as well. Authoritarian regimes like these three only understand power. Appeasement does not work with them.
What else would he say, even if it hadn’t failed?
has appeasement ever worked?
Maybe if we send the exiled former prince of Iran we can help. His dad used to run the freakin country, ok?
Son of the last defeated dictatorship SHAH, he didn’t do anything in his whole life rather than having fun with the millions of dollars that they stole from country. and now he is expecting people win the war with mullahs and become the next dictator, poor stupid bastard.
Takes an autocrat to know anothers
Appeasing bullies no matter who they are or where they are has never worked. It just keeps the peace for a brief moment of time.
Can you be a crown prince of a country that doesn’t call you the crown prince??
If only we had left the democratic government alone and ignored the oil companies…
Crown prince? Lmao, its been like 50yrs since they were deposed. Time to move on bruh
I used to see The Crown Prince at school; Texas Tech University. Wild.
The shah was great, why did they ever get rid of him.
These Iranian royal and royal-adjacent exiles in the US wield a crazy amount of influence in the US far right – guess it must have something to do with big oil..
Oh ffs. It’s the CIA, your father, and the oil industry that started this mess to begin with. All in the sake of preventing Iran from nationalizing their oil fields.
The reason the Islamic state exists at all is because of this guy’s horrific family
Yeah, like this guys old man didn’t have everything to do with inciting fundamentalist religious whack jobs coming to power. His old man had Jaleh Square on his hands…secret police, torture cells, no free press. Appealing to the same mindsets that created the Mujhadeen or empowered the drug running Contras is just more bad policy after bad policy.
I’m sorry but who the fuck is listening to anyone from the Shah dynasty?? His father was only ever in power because the British killed his predecessor Mossadegh and forced him into a position of power as a Western puppet. Can we not be critical of the Ayatollah without needing the input of a Pinochet-esque American proxy??
No need to value opinion of guy who’s qualification is being the son of a father who was installed by imperialist USA when democratic elections didn’t turn out the way the US wanted them to. Which led to even worse…
According to ghandi “kick these fuckers in the cunt, they’re not to be trusted.”
Not my words, but I get the sentiment
As someone who is deeply opposed to the Iranian government, I can think of few people whose opinion on the situation I care less for, than any member of the deposed royal family.
This wouldn’t have happened if his family actually cared about the Iranian people lmao.
People think that just because he’s the Shah’s son that he wants a return to a dictatorship when he has been outspoken about Iran needing to be a secular democracy to succeed. He’s his own person with his own opinions.
We also need to learn some history here on why the Ayatollah came into power to begin with.
Hint: it’s the usual suspect that loves to spread democracy everywhere.
You know I used to once be a crown prince myself…
Shah was terribly disliked in Iran. He was a US installed puppet. Please read about the CIA Coup of 1956 (US admitted to this few years ago). Iran already had a popular democratically elected leader and the CIA got rid of him. This led to Shah’s terrible regime and eventual revolution. Mossadegh was a very popular leader in Iran. The US/UK could not stand an independent Iran.
If the CIA had not installed the Shah there would be no Islamic republic today.
Iranians want nothing to do with the Shah or his family.
In 20 to 30 years Russia and Iran’s leaders will die of old age. No one will grieve them. People will rather celebrate. And the world spins another day. I hope humans destroy this planet. This universe will be better off with humans never existing.
