  2. Tik Tok does not work in China… So ByteDance, the Chinese owner of Tik Tok, launched Douyin exclusively for the Chinese market.

    Douyin does not have the same content as Tik Tok, Douyin focuses on giving Chinese children educational content, entertainment developed by specialists for Chinese children on top of putting forward traditional items, holidays, national celebrations and Chinese government propaganda.

  3. If ByteDance doesn’t sell TikTok and they instead shut down in the US, there’s going to be a scramble to create a nearly identical platform to which the same creators and users will migrate. If Reddit shut down for whatever reason then some other site with roughly the same concept would spring up and people would post there instead. It’s the nature of enshittification that these platforms only exist as long as their momentum allows them to abuse the users for monetization. I wouldn’t mourn the death of any corporation.

  5. I have no opinion for or against but if this passes my guess is Dems lose the youth vote. It sounds silly but this will probably anger them more than any other issue.

  9. TikTok is a mixed bag of legitimate, factual content, but most of it falls off in favor of emotional bullshit built on derived nonsense intended to push a given agenda.

    It won’t be missed, and would be quickly replaced anyway.

    But let’s be honest here, the stupid platform isn’t going anywhere no matter what Congress and POTUS do. It will be pushed into the Courts where it will sit for years.

    Also, why and how did a CHINESE company make such an apparently momentous social media platform? How did the Japanese or South Koreans not make one first? Chinese govt is isolationist when not doing business.
