Hi r/Ireland, I am Alex French, Head of Product for [SIRO](https://siro.ie/?utm_medium=organic_social&utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=live_qa_jan). If you have questions about choosing a broadband service, what exactly FTTH is, or how to get the best Wi-Fi speed out of your connection ask them here! Following on from some recent broadband threads, I’ll be here from 1pm-4pm to answer any broadband-related questions.

A little bit about me: I’ve worked in the internet industry here since 1994 in dialup, DSL, Wi-Fi, and fibre businesses. My background is technical (routers, switches and software) although these days I work in Product – I help figure out what exactly we should be selling… our service is sold through 19 retailers like Vodafone, Sky and Digiweb, Pure and Viatel.

**Ask me anything about SIRO, broadband in Ireland in general, fibre, how to get the best speed at your location, or how to improve your Wi-Fi coverage!**

(Thanks to the r/Ireland mods for facilitating this)

**EDIT: I’m wrapping up now but thanks for all the questions! We’ll reply to any DMs later/tomorrow. Feel free to DM with any other questions too. Thanks again to the mods.**

**Final edit: Answered a few more questions, but if you want to check availability of SIRO stick you eircode into** [**our eircode checker**](https://siro.ie/?utm_medium=organic_social&utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=live_qa_jan) **and you’ll also be asked if you want to get updates when we roll out to your premises. Bye!**

  1. Can you bring fibre to my house please? I am living a 10 minute walk away from Cork City and have been waiting for it to happen for years.

  2. Why don’t you have an app to report faults?

I have SIRO with Sky and when there’s a fault I have to ring Sky who in turn contact SIRO (or so they tell me), why not have an app or a webpage that shows current reported faults and the fix ETA?

  3. Broadband is expected in my road by April. How will I be informed when it’s ready, and how do I register so that I can have broadband installed ASAP?

    Edit: thanks for doing this!

  4. SIRO is enabled on my street for every single house except mine.

Not expecting you to fix this, but I’m here to moan about it anyway – very annoying

  5. As a former fibre tech, I came to the conclusion the the reason most/all fibre installed by ISP is passive is purely to create an barrier to leasing out or selling fibres as there is no real benefit to them over active fibre. As the ISP/POTS/CABLE industry is a natural monopoly it prevents the government from nationalizing the fibre and allowing other ISPs to replace the end equipment (OLT, OLTs).

    What’s your opinion on this?

  6. Is Google WiFi a good option to increase the range of internet around the house with your service and will it be possible to put the router into bridge mode to help facilitate this?

  7. Hey so, I’m on siro and last week or so the connection started going to utter pieces in the evening. The sites say it is not a shared connection ie no contention ratio..

So is that actually the case or are some providers playing fast and loose with it?

  8. Can we please get more upload speed?
At one point some people were getting 200mb up provisioned on 1gb plans.
Now the 1gb plans all seem to only be 100mb upload.

  9. Siro was announced as this major new thing yet I only ever see them working in town centres were HS broadband already exists. What’s the story with that?

  10. Is there any plan to roll out in Dublin or are you leaving that to Virgin? Could do with an alternative supplier.

  11. Can you bring Fibre to my house… I live in Dublin, I have a fibre box literally outside my front window, but the apparently all the god damn ports are taken already. It’s infuriating.

  12. Hi Alex,

Thank you for doing this. I must say that when activated the siro network is brilliant however getting there is a nightmare:

I recently bought a new build in an area and estate that has siro availablity. While I don’t necessarily blame siro, why in the name of God does it take new builds months and months to get proper broadband? While I don’t necessarily blame siro can you explain the process for the databases to be updated or whatever? I have been in my house for three months with an eircode in a siro enabled area and the siro website nor any broadband providers recognise my eircode yet.

I was/am pulling my hair out so I did some research. Everyone that buys new builds seems to have this issue. Surely in this day and age there must be a better way of doing things? The builds are planned for years before they are ready. I don’t understand. Where does the issue in the process chain lay?

I am still without broadband, can you advise me know to proceed? Who I need to contact etc? I have contacted siro, and GeoDirectory but have not gotten anywhere yet.

    Regards,
    Thom

  13. When a reseller sells SIRO are they essentially white labelling your product end-to-end with their own support services and billing, or do they have some of their own infrastructure at the other end of the pipe like data-centres etc?

  14. Weird one, but I’m based in swords, the whole place is filled with decent broadband. Except the raid I’m on haha

I’ve terrible DSL, is there anything I can do to get companies to upgrade my line or install siro or something?

Only option i see currently is starlink, and I didn’t wanna go down that avenue tbh

  15. When can we get SIRO in Fermoy?

For background, Working from home on 12MBps is a struggle? I’ve been to all companies, DigiWeb, Vodafone, Eir, Sky, max realistically is 15Mbps. really need to upgrade here.

What are the plans for rollout, is there a list of locations and towns?

  16. Why don’t SIRO give any notice to ISPs when they are carrying out maintenance on the network? Twice in the last year or so I’ve been without internet for the whole day and according to my ISP it was because SIRO were doing maintenance on the network and had not informed them in advance.

  17. I live in a south side suburb of Cork city and in February/March 2020 SIRO were laying cables and updating boxes in the area. I assume that lockdown got in the way of finishing the work and it’s still not available. Any chance it’s planned to finish? I know that the more affluent suburbs adjacent have it available

  18. Happy SIRO customer here from day one.
How do you decide what area’s get your service? For example I can get SIRO at my residence, however I know neighboring estates do not have access to the service which seems odd?

  19. Any plans for providing broadband in west Galway? Based near spiddal and apparently there’s a fibre line but not many people have access to it.

  20. There seems to be a major disconnect between systems communicating with each other, i.e eir shop/eir customer care/open eir, from my experience they are never in sync or always some miscommunication. Do you know if there is a reason for this?

I eventually got FTTH after a year of trying as it stopped just 200m up the road(rural), they were able to run the cable to my house, but next door to me have been told it can’t be extended an extra 50m to them. Why is it never easy dealing with these people!

  21. Do you know why Open Eir insist on capping upload speeds on their gigabit fibre products to 100mb?

As far as I’m aware you don’t, so I’d love to know if there’s a technical reason beyond the “computer says no” answer I get from Open Eir.

  22. There’s a Siro fibre box 30m from my house and yet when I put my eircode into the Siro site it says not available in my area. Can you explain why? Thanks

  23. I signed up for notifications about when siro would be available in my area, I seem to be emailed about everything other than it being available in my area.

Can you segment your marketing or something?

  24. Can you put some actual info out there about how the SIRO network is connected up. The ads seem to suggest it’s magic, the sales reps I talked to hadn’t a clue. It took me ages to find out that it’s fibre running along the ESB poles which stemmed from the backhaul network built to take data from mobile phone masts back to the (internet?) network. For ages I was thinking ye’d somehow cracked running data on the ESB power lines using some advanced version of Broadband over Power Line
