  1. > Marks and Spencer rebrands Midget Gems after claims name is offensive to people with dwarfism

I refer to them as “fun-size”

  2. If you needed any evidence that prejudiced mocking behaviours against little people are still so prominent as to require consideration in the use of language like ‘midget’, look no further than some of the comments in this thread.

Edit: As a point of clarification, I’m referring specifically to people like OP making shitty jokes about people with serious medical conditions.

  3. Cue boomers voting Tory again as the biggest threat to this nation is wokism, and not a cabal of corrupt sociopaths selling everything not nailed down, and sending us into future poverty.

    “What’s next, fucking black jack’s”

  4. Don’t think it’s necessary and never heard anyone that did, but it’s a private matter for a primate business, they can do whatever they want.

  5. Omg seriously! The news in this country is getting worse

Just because a few complain doenst mean you should rebrand after all these years

  6. This women seems an absolute witch.

Can we ban ginger nuts, mini pork pies , cheese puffs and every other word that’s offensive

Can we start a petition to keep it midget

  7. Does anyone with any sensibilities really care about this? If they just changed the name overnight and this wasn’t in the news, would anyone here getting stroppy about it actually have noticed?

  8. Oh no they changed a sweet’s name cos they wanted to look like they were being nice.

    Fire up the pitchforks.

  9. I think the nuance missing is that an academic of disability studies who has dwarfism has been campaigning for the change. When your life has been coloured by people treating you differently because of your disability, I feel like wanting to raise awareness of the harm the word midget has caused her is quite legitimate.

  10. Sure it might not be ‘politically correct’ language, but people are offended by everything these days. Are there even bigger versions of them just called Gems? It’s not exactly like they named them intending to offend people.

Sure it doesn’t affect me in any way – but you can call me anything you want, I’m not offended by it. Unless it’s actually attacking my character and it’s untrue, any name /term can be said and it doesn’t actually offend me in any way. I’m very much of the Jimmy Carr thought process that anything can also be joked about.

Claiming it’s offensive to people with Dwarfism is in itself probably slightly offensive – as apparently they like to be called ‘little people’. I actually find saying ‘little people’ more offensive and condescending (not that I ever have said it or actually ever met any).

  11. Tesco have also, but the packs delivered still say midget gems, if you search ‘midget gems’ their 29p pack doesn’t turn up they’re now ‘mini gems’

  12. I literally see no issue with this and, honestly, this opened my eyes to my ignorant view that I didn’t even realise the connotation with the name. Good on M&S for this, honestly.

Anyone who gets offended by this change need a slap in their gammony face.

  13. It’s a tiny update that impacts nobody negatively, and people only react with anger because that’s always been their default response to any and all change.

  14. Saw a warning on amazon prime video the other day on something ‘contains smoking and strong language’ like wtf lol. Smoking..

  15. Calling people’s names is horrible. We get that! But for real… Grow up! So many adults are behaving like they’re still in primary school. With that said, I’ve never known fruity sweets, call anyone names. It would seem the most popular trend is “being offended.” The real news is that offence is subjective! I will still be calling them Midget Gems. And as always I will continue calling people with dwarfism – People! Stop labelling each other! It offends me! 🤣
