  1. The claim that sufferers of this illness have higher tolerance for alcohol seems dubious to me. It’s not like they also have some magical liver enzyme that makes them process and excrete alcohol any faster than the rest of us.

  2. Holy cow, this world is full of the most interesting, strange and unique things. I think I remember a podcast a number of years ago related to this type of abnormality.

  3. The article says that sufferers of this illness can have symptoms like that of drunkenness namely slurred speech and high blood alcohol levels.
Not to be un compassionate but they ARE drunk it’s just not through any fault of their own.

I definitely want to cut the person some slack but at the same time they shouldn’t be allowed to drive if they can’t control these symptoms in the same way a person who suffers from uncontrollable hypoglycemia shouldn’t.

  4. I think it’s called auto-brewery syndrome (Cool name) but essentially their gut is fermenting ethanol from it’s contents, although I think this might happen to everyone just a really low amount, please correct me if I’m wrong

  5. I’ll bet his friends are looking a little funny at him when they’re low on funds on a Friday night. /s

  6. Sorry if it’s insensitive to ask but what if a muslim person has this condition?

  7. Wasn’t there a similar story in Pennsylvania not long ago?

  8. My Mum in her last at least 20 years couldn’t tolerate alcohol. We used to laugh that she’d be off her face after a sip of Cava (when Cava was all the rage – shows you how long ago it was)!! Turns out she had a problem (not the same as the article) where her blood levels looked like she was an alcoholic & had been drinking at the time of the blood test. GP gave her a right lecture on cutting back her drinking. She told him she didn’t and he said she was in denial. I had to go with her to an appointment and confirm she didn’t drink. That prompted them to look further into it and discover she was producing some enzyme that looked like she’d been drinking. She had a note on her file in case she was ever stopped by the police. A breath test would be ok but a blood sample would look like she was over the limit!

  9. Insert TF2 Demoman instructing his lungs to be converted into alcohool refineries.
