I understand offering an ad-free subscription, that’s not the issue. The issue is asking for a paid subscription in order to opt out of tracking cookies. Is this even legal per GDPR?
Because they have to make some money. If you’re not paying, you agree to let them generate some data they can sell for money. Seems fine?
They do that because they have not completely lost any subscribers and influence so far, and are not bankrupt yet, but they are working hard on shooting themselves into the foot as good as they can.
Hint: In Firefox you can configure your browser to delete all cookies when you close the window, except for specific web sites that you want to use with cookies (like Reddit). Then install the “IDontCareAboutCookies” extension, which will just OK everything for you … and enjoy the silence 🙂
