Ian Hislop Tears Into MPs Over Sleaze, Second Jobs And Lobbying

  1. Watch the video of it.

My god they couldn’t look more uncomfortable whilst showing a complete lack of understanding what these ~~bribes~~ ~~lobbying money~~ second jobs look like to anyone else.

  2. Alberto Costa, what a reptile and complete waste of time and space. The amount of time he spent constructing his flawed analogy which wasn’t germane to the discussion was ridiculous. The way he was oh so very polite to everyone seemed utterly insincere and soaked up more minutes which could have been put to use.

Sir Bernard Jenkin was awful too. I’d be interested to know how many times Mr “I vote with my brain” has voted against the whip. His whole line of let’s not talk about rules, but have nice chats so we can educate MPs so they don’t do a corruption, was ridiculous. Hislop is right, transparency, tougher rules, effectively policed is the way forward.

  3. Basic summary of this (I watched it earlier): Ian Hislop eloquently explains the painfully obvious to a bunch of MPs. They are either unable or unwilling to understand, and respond with little more than obfuscation, rather than having the humility to say “yes, you’re right, we’ve been consistently incompetent and need to fix that”.

Every time I hear any of them utter the phrase “right honourable gentleman” in Parliament, I am sitting here wishing that someone had invented a way of pressing a button on your TV remote (or computer keyboard) to make a giant fist appear and give the MP a punch in the middle of their face. That phrase is a blatant piss-take and outright lie almost every time it is uttered. I don’t know what the historical or traditional reason is for why they have to say it, but whatever it might be, it isn’t good enough, not by a long way.

  4. He’s generally spot on with his views and this is no different, although to me not harsh enough on the corrupt, self serving bastards.

  5. Jenkin was trying to bring Hislop around to mandatory training, I thought?

Educators, for example, complete in-depth online training which deals with the legal aspects of their job, which is automatically logged in their HR files. The training is re-taken every year to keep the information up-to-date and to ensure compliance.

It would certainly concentrate the minds of MP’s if ignorance or confusion around the rules were inadmissible – and also clarify and speed up proceedings against them where rule-breaking was alleged to have taken place.
