It may be pleasing, from a climate health point of view, to watch the decline in coal-to-power use in much of Europe and North America, but things are still done very differently in Asia. New Energy World Editor-at-large Steve Hodgson FEI has been looking at statistics.

In the long run the economics will change that as it did in the US. For the most part coal is dead in the US, but some of the coal mining regions do not want to believe that. Asia has to import their coal, which increases the cost, therevy making it hard to compete with renewables on a cost basis. Much of Asia is growing economically and needs all the energy it can produce to power that growth. I wish it were different but that is the reality.
> Liebreich is convinced that society has reached a tipping point beyond which it is unthinkable not to deal with climate change.
It’s unthinkable!!!
Meanwhile, in reality and indeed confirmed in the same article, nations are building more and more new coal plants in 2024.
China touts its solar achievements and downplays its coal use.
