Donald Trump‘s inner circle doesn’t expect the Supreme Court to go along with his extreme arguments about executive power in the immunity case before the justices. But what the high court does now is almost beside the point: Trump already won.

Three people with direct knowledge of the matter tell Rolling Stone that many of the former president’s lawyers and political advisers have already accepted that the justices will likely rule against him, and reject his claims to expansive presidential immunity in perpetuity. Bringing the case before the court — after a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C., shut down their arguments on executive power — was a delaying tactic designed to push Trump’s criminal election subversion trial past Election Day this fall. The strategy paid off so much more than MAGAworld anticipated.

“We already pulled off the heist,” says a source close to Trump, noting it doesn’t matter to them what the Supreme Court decides now.

  2. Good ol’ rich white people justice system. Never fails.

  3. This is why we don’t even nominate people indicted with 91 felonies, idiots

  4. They’re celebrating delaying his trial until after the election bc they assume he’s going to win the election. Let’s rain on their parade by voting for Biden.

  5. The victory condition was never about getting the immunity judgement. It’s been about drawing out and postponing the trial until after the election.

The Supreme Court is going to give them that outcome.

  6. “Gentlemen!” <raises glass> “To evil!”

  7. I don’t subscribe to the theory that every Trunp win is a win, every Trump loss is a win, and every other event in the universe is also a Trump win. It’s nonsense.

  8. And if Trump does win the case, Biden can legally have Trump unalived.

  9. So another “Trump being lower on polls is bad news for Biden”

  10. What I’ll find interesting is if the NY case goes as most people expect – guilty verdict, then appeals – if he’ll start to lose his shine on Judge Cannon and others in their line.

The more unpopular he becomes, the more they see him as a loser, the less money he has to spend – how long until his special treatment fades away?

  11. Jack Smith asked the Supreme Court to rule on his immunity claims in December of 2023 and they said no. Then, 3 months later, they just decided to take it up.

    CORRUPT. ILLEGITIMATE. COURT.

  12. Wouldn’t it be a fantastic surprise, if, behind the scenes, the immunity case is suddenly expedited and brought forward – against all prior beliefs. Oh, how well that would be received.

  13. > At the Supreme Court, Sauer has argued the justices should not concern themselves with “lurid hypotheticals” that “almost certainly never will occur, and would virtually certainly result in impeachment and Senate conviction … if they did occur.”

Ohhh, suuuuure. Almost certainly never. Suuuuuuure.

  14. Can you imagine how fucked he’s going to be if he actually loses the election?

  15. So very many things rely on this, all their chips are on the table, they are all in. Some of these people “all in” are bright, are connected, and have a plan. There is an ace up their sleeves. I don’t know what it is, but we are going to see some serious shit go down. This will be a coordinated level of “game theory” we have never seen before, and there is big money on the line.

  16. Why is it a given the trial will be after the election? The decision should come in June? July at the latest? The judge has already shown that running for office is not a job that gets you out of court. And he initiated the delay. So tough luck, trial in August?

  17. Maybe a mod is in here but why is Rolling Stone on the approved domain list when the sub rules say:

Sources must not be locked behind Paywalls which require user subscription or information and cannot be bypassed via an “incognito” window. Domains that offer a certain amount of non-paywalled articles are allowed.

  18. The court has to know that they are running out of exits to course correct. After overturning Roe v wade, the obscene amounts of bribery and corruption (like how the fuck is Clarence Thomas still there) and this kind of shit, they have to know they are edging towards just becoming a relic and a full on illegitimate court. Hey NSA tell the court it’s people say fix your shit! You’re the Supreme Court you’re not just Trump lackeys in nice robes! Fuck, at least you’re not supposed to be, and if you find you are (Ahem Clarence?) maybe you should do the right thing and step down.

  19. Why can’t the Georgia case go ahead? I thought McAfee said he would push ahead even though there is an appeal.

  20. I mean, they essentially argued that Biden has the right to order Trump’s execution at the appeals court, so losing would arguably be in Trump’s favor if the Democrats were willing to stoop to his level.

  21. The Supreme Court taking this case the way they did ensured a minimum 8 month delay over a question that was never in doubt.

  22. Hitler was confident he could win right up to his last breathing day. No, I think tRump is just that delusional that he can pull it off but I’m still voting.

  23. C’mon America. The world cares about you. Why do you keep hanging around your toxic ex. You know he is just using you to get what he wants and he knows he is nothing without you. He will turn you into a scared, helpless, timid thing that can’t think of its own and make you think you NEED his abusive bullcrap. All of this to feed his fragile ego. There are plenty of good fish in that ocean. You don’t have to settle for his crap. You are so much better than him.

  24. While they have serious ratfuckery planned, I think (like last time) it still requires some semblance of electoral victory and I think they grossly underestimate how sour a conviction will be for him with independents. There’s still the Georgia case, there’s still the hush money case, and he’s not out campaigning. Not to mention he’s nuclear fucked financially and looks like he’s dying.

  25. If anyone believes the legal acumen of tRump’s bottom of the barrel, Temu sourced, Wish.com purchased legal team, then I have a bridge over the river Nowhere to sell you.

By pushing tRump’s case until later in the year it *guarantees* all of tRump’s media coverage will be about what a crook he is, his huge legal bills, and how the RNC paying those bills is hurting down ballot Repugnicans.

You cannot take seriously an article celebrating supposed “3-dimensional chess” being played by 2-dimensional morons!

  26. What kind of protection/security do the justices have (in general, and right now)? Seems like they’d certainly be targeted

  27. Literally everyone knew this was the case when the Supreme Court stepped in. The fact they did it so openly is a big middle finger from the Supreme Court.

  28. “You can’t ground me! I like being in my room!”

  29. Absolutely disgusting what SCOTUS is doing.. they are purposely dragging this out to help Trump

Anyone with a brain can see it… and it is perfectly legal and they can try and look “innocent”

    Vote vote vote please…

  30. Can I get a synopsis of the article? Paywalls are so great 🙂

  31. The trial shouldn’t have been delayed at all. The matter is too important to wait. If Trump was found to be immune you’d just move to dismiss the charges at that time.

But instead we just see that the system is absolutely corrupt.

  32. John Roberts and his band of conservative freaks are gutless fucking cowards and right wing terrorists.

  33. Thank goodness for this article because I would’ve never thought of this … Whole purpose was to delay? Huh … Next article was on a new discovery that when cement hardens, it’s heavy. Brilliant!

  34. I’d be celebrating, too, if I were them.

Even though he wouldn’t go there, do they really want Biden to have that kind of carte blanche on an election year?

  35. “At the Supreme Court, Sauer has argued the justices should not concern themselves with “lurid hypotheticals” that “almost certainly never will occur, and would virtually certainly result in impeachment and Senate conviction … if they did occur.””

Okay, we can stick to the lurid facts which actually did occur, and which did not result in Trump’s removal, because despite the House impeaching, Senate Republicans said no to removal.

  36. IMO. The best possible world is where Trump makes it to the election out of jail, loses, and is soon after sent away for the rest of his life. If he we’re to get sentenced prior, that might shift all the momentum to Haley. So they may have won the battle, but I want to win the war.

  37. Depressing article, though I disagree with the notion that his lawyers don’t expect the SC side with Trump. At this point I just assume Trump will always get his way and never be held accountable. Two tier justice system indeed.

  38. Trump are his people are enemies of the USA and should not be treated any other way.

  39. No matter what shenanigans they pull out, make sure you vote

  40. Genuinely wonder what his legal strategies might be after he loses the election.

    1. Continue delaying with unlimited GOP funds until he does a martyr?

    2. Flee to Russia?

  41. SCOTUS is active participant in this heist. Crooked fucks.

  42. I’m so sick of his fucking scowling, bronzer-smeared face.
